COMPLETED Antrim place name
« on: Saturday 02 June 12 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hello folks,

Been sitting on this one for awhile, but really need some help in deciphering what the place name is on the fourth line down. I believe the line below it is County of Antrim.

Its from a Scottish 1855 birth record, so I got lucky.

The rest of it says..

Patrick McGrogan
Coal Miner
32 Years
??
County of Antrim

Thank you.

Nicky

Thank you hepburn :) Been lurking awhile, this forum has been a great resource.

Yes I have tried to compare it to a list of places in Antrim. The best I could come up with that its been spelt incorrectly. Patrick McGrogan was Irish and illiterate so the registrar probably wrote down what he thought he heard. It looks as if he hesitated halfway through writing the place name.

Best we could come up with is Culfeightrin.

It looks like it starts with 'Cal' to me.

Deciphering has never been a strong point of mine!  ;D

I was looking at Cul or Cal with the last two letters being in
McMillan/Marshall - Mochrum, Whithorn,
Smith/Sinclair - Berwick Upon Tweed
McGrogan - Carfin/Holytown, Newark, NJ, Malvern, PA
Murphy - Carfin/Holytown, Newark, NJ, Clones Ireland
Clark/Ogilvie - Lanarkshire

Hi Nicky,

Don't know if this will help or just confuse matters further but ... there's a couple of places in NI called Culkeeran, but they aren't in Antrim. Don't know if the borders could have changed since then  :-\ but I thought the similarity was worth mentioning.

There is a townland called Coolkeeran in Antrim. In the civil parish of Loughguile. Details here: http://www.thecore.com/seanruad

The Irish word 'cúl' is sometimes anglicised as 'cool' explaining the spelling issue at the start of the name.

It looks to me like Calkaaren / Calkaarin.

remember, being Ireland, it might be the name of a townland, not necessarily a town per se.
