he was a steward aboard ship ... I had a look at Merchant Seaman lists and theres a
P MENDES  from Portugal aged 50 (in I think 1933) all it gives is his discharge number and number of ship he was on at time... might be worth pursuing

That is really interesting, I can have a look at what else that info. gives, and once I see that birth cert. it should give a better picture. I was just thinking they both could have been married before unless he was old enough to be the father of the Mendes I am looking for. What would be his birth year about 1883 I think, although his son might be too young for Miss Edwards and a child in 1924?

Thanks again

hmm  would suspect he might have knocked a few years off in 33 maybe to get the job - from the census if that age was right he would have been a bit over 60? 10 years seems a lot to knock off but I have a GGGranddad passing himself as 56 when he was in fact 72 !!!
Did this guy stay around with Miss Edwards/have more children with her?  ... I have some romantic picture of some sexy Portuguese  in dock at Cardiff sweeping her off her feet ... ships that pass in the night so to speak!

The merchants seaman records may have a next of kin/shore address ..not really sure what info you can get - its not something I've had to look in to - but I would image by 33 the records would have a lot more info on than the earlier ones

Yes, it looks like there were two more children in Surrey in the 1930's, to the same couple.

Thought you would be pleased to know that it does appear to be the 1933 marriage of Joachim MENDES & Sarah Maud DAVIES nee EDWARDS.

Have sent our friend Joachim's merchant navy papers which has his photograph on it!!!!!
Our friend is extremely pleased & she can see the family resemblance to Joachim's grandson!!!
Joachim stayed around in Cardiff but I don't know if they were living together when he died in 1956.
Joachim & Sarah Maud were both widowed before their 1933 wedding which would explain them marrying so long after their child was born.
