Paul Edward Batchelder
« on: Saturday 02 June 12 14:20 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to finding out when my OH's Great Grandfather died. I checked the free BMD, Ancestry & Find my Past but can't find any entry that could be him.  ???

The details I have are.....
Born: Q4 1870 St George Hanover Square, London
Married: Q2 1908 to Nellie Eliza Dark - Lewisham
1871: Lived in St George Hanover Square, London
1881: Livid in Edmonton, Middlesex
1891: Lived in Croydon, Surrey
1901: Lived in Croydon, Surrey
1911: Lived in Croydon, Surrey

Nellie remarried in 1921 so I'm assuming he died sometime between 1911 and 1921.

Can anybody help?

Hi,

Is Nellie described as a widow on 1921 marriage certificate?  Could Paul have died abroad in WW1?

I'm a bit broke at the moment so haven't got the marriage certificate. I have looked through the millitary records on ancestry but found nothing.

I'm hoping someone with more experiance might find him.

Hi,

Are you certain that it is his wife marrying in 1921?   Could it have been a cousin/niece?

I've done some more digging and have found a copy of the marriage certificate, Nellie was listed as a Widow. She also has a son by her new husband although he was actually born 6 years before they eventually married.

I have also found an entry for him in the 1913 Kelly Directory in Croydon as a private resident.

I now know he died somewhere between 1913 and 1915!

Any ideas where or how to search for his death certificate? I pulling out my hair on this one!

Hi,

Could he have been an early WW1 casualty?  You can search www.cwgc.org.

WW1 deaths abroad will be listed in a separate register.

My elusive Paul Batchelder wasn't listed here either, I'm beginning to think I'll never find it  >:(

Googling Paul Edward Batchelder produces a link to a Batchelder genealogy site.  Paul's name appears on the list but only his name, there is no additional information on him.  Other names on the site might be of interest to you and there's additional information on some of them.

If my calculations are correct, Nellie began an affair about the time that Paul "disappears".  Maybe the two are linked.  She starts an affair and he leaves, or he leaves and she starts an affair.

You don't actually know that he died between 1913 and 1915, despite Nellie's description of herself as a widow.
