Hello,

I've been trying to tie various disperate Swarbreck DNA matches trees together and the most problematic is my own! :D

My 5xGG Margaret Swarbreck married John Bateson 4 May 1790 at Pilling, Lancs. They had 6 children that I know of, all born in Pilling: John b1788, Robert b1789, William b1792, Thomas b1796, James b1798 and Agnes b1802. I know John Bateson's father was Robert. Their first born John was illegitimate so named after his father. I would guess their third William was named after Margaret's father but that's a guess.

The only baptism I've seen for Margaret in the mid 1760s is 7 Mar 1764 Margaret daughter of Richard of Hardhorn, baptised at Poulton Le Fylde. I don't like that it's to a Richard as that doesn't fit the usual order but???

I'd welcome any info if anyone has any please?

Regards
David

There is this:

Marriage: 28 May 1754 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
John Swarbrick - (X), of Pilling
Alice Gardner - (X), of Pilling
Witness: James Tomlinson, (X); William Sykes, (X)
Married by Publication by: John Coulton, Curate
    Source: LDS Film 1470931 & 1502429

Burial: 24 Nov 1804 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
John Swarbrick -
    Died: 22 Nov 1804
    Age: 81
    Occupation: Labourer
    Source: LDS Film 1470931 & 1502429

John and Alice had two children known to me:
1. Baptism: 2 May 1756 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
William Swarbrick - son of John Swarbrick
    Source: LDS Films 1470931 & 1502429

He married at Hambleton:
Extract from the register of the Parish Church, Hambleton:
17th January 1780 William Swarbrick and Ann Roskell were married at Kirkham Parish Church, by banns. Both were of Hambleton and both made their mark.

2. Baptism: 5 Sep 1759 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Robert Swarbrick - son of John Swarbrick
    Source: LDS Films 1470931 & 1502429

He married at Pilling:

Marriage:
11 Dec 1787 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Robert Swarbrick - (X), Rawcliffe
Hannah Bradshaw - (X), Pilling
    Witness: Matthew Bradshaw; William Readman
Married by Banns by: William Bateson
Source: LDS Film 1470931 and 1502429

It is possible that Margaret was a daughter of John and a sibling of William and Robert.

William and Ann named their youngest daughter Margaret [born 1799 at Hambleton].

It's all circumstantial I'm afraid.

Many thanks for the info. Yes it is all circumstantial but this helps me a lot  :)

I like William Swarbrick marrying Ann Roskell as I have DNA matches down that line but I had a different William for that marriage and couldn’t reconcile that with those matches. Making William a sister of Margaret fits well. I had assumed that Margaret and John’s first born was named after her husband and so was blind to the more usual chance that is was after her father.

I’ll do more looking at John and Alice.

Thanks again

You've not found Margaret who would have been born 1765-1773ish as I haven't. There doesn't appear to be a Catholic recusant gap as such with the family but I think I'll stop looking for her and accept her being a daughter of John and Alice in Pilling is a good fit.

The suggestion is, from the presumed burial for John age 81 on 22 Nov 1804 at Pilling, that he should be born around 1723 but nothing found around that year. This could be a recusant gap but I found a John son of William of Upper Rawcliffe baptised 9 Mar 1728 at St Michael on Wyre. As John's first son is a William and Upper Rawcliffe is close enough I'm thinking this is likely. Would you agree?

I had not considered that there might be any Catholic connection as I have hitherto found no evidence for such. However, there is also this marriage for a possible sister of Margaret:

Marriage: 21 Mar 1768 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Matthew Mount - Husbandman, Pilling
Ann Swarbrick - (X), Pilling
Witness: William Preston; Jno. Winder, (X)
Married by Banns by: Cuthbert Harrison
Source: LDS Film 1470931 and 1502429

And another possible connection here:
Marriage: 30 Dec 1794 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Robert Houseman - (X), Labourer, Pilling
Agnes Swarbrick - (X), Spinster, Pilling
    Witness: Jane Moore; John Preston
Married by Banns by: Thomas Godfrey
Source: LDS Film 1470931 and 1502429

And I have these for Alice:
Baptism: 23 Jun 1734 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Alice Gardner - dau of Robert Gardner
    Source: LDS Films 1470931 & 1502429

Burial: 8 Mar 1783 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Alice Swarbrick -
    Source: LDS Film 1470931 & 1502429

As for the John baptised at St Michael's on 9th March 1728 - I believe that he was the third of five children born to William and Jennet [Parker] Swarbrick.
Marriage: 3 May 1722 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England
William Swarbrick - Singleton
Jennet Parker - Out Rawcliffe
Married by Pub [Publication of banns]

After this marriage William and Jennet, from the evidence of their children's baptisms, appear to have lived at Upper Rawcliffe.

Baptism: 7 Jul 1723 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England
Richard Swarbreck - Son of William Swarbreck

Possible death:
Burial: 4 Jan 1755 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire
Richard Swarbrick -

Baptism: 26 Feb 1726/7 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Swarbrick - Daughter of William Swarbrick

Presumed death:
Burial: 10 Aug 1732 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England

Baptism: 3 Feb 1733/4 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England

Marriage: 26 Aug 1756 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England
Robert Swarbrick - (X), Out Rawcliffe
Agnes Madder - (X), Out Rawcliffe
    Witness: James Mirescough; Richard Baines
Married by Banns by: William Crombleholme, Vicar

Burial: 19 Jul 1788 St Michael, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England
Robert Swarbrick -

I have nothing more on John - it is possible he was your man, but it is not proven and would need more evidence I think.

Hi,

I have been doing a little more digging and found this at the National Archives, which might be relevant:
The National Archives' catalogue
IR - Records of the Boards of Stamps, Taxes, Excise, Stamps and Taxes, and Inland Revenue
Division within IR - Legacy Duty: Succession Duty and Estate Duty records
IR 26 - Board of Inland Revenue and predecessors: Estate Duty Office and predecessors: Registers of Legacy Duty, Succession Duty and Estate Duty
Subseries within IR 26 - Country Courts
Sub subseries within IR 26 - Abstracts of Administrations and Probates of Wills
IR 26/312 - Will and administration register: Diocese of CHESTER: Deaneries Amounderness: entry numbers Wills 1-214, Administrations 657-736. Copeland:...

Entry:
Amounderness
Date of Administration and Sum Sworn to:
1797
21st April
Estate £200
665 [number of entry]
Name and Description of the Intestate:
William Swarbrick of Pilling in the County of Lancaster, Yeoman.
Name and Place of Abode, with the degree of kindred of the Administrator or Administratrix:
Margaret Wife of Rich. Redman of Rawcliffe in this County, natural and lawful sister of the Deceased.

Not immediately clear where this fits, but there was a definite connection between the Swarbrick and Redman families.

Hi,

Many thanks indeed for looking and sending me all the info.

I took your point that it needs a bit more evidence although I've found almost nothing in Pilling which is frustrating. I too was looking into what the National Archives also found this probate which is very helpful - a pity it wasn't a will!  :D

I already have these in my tree:-

Richard Redman of Rawcliffe baptised 25 Apr 1736 at Stalmine to Rodger and Elizabeth

He married Margaret Swarbrick 20 Sep 1761 at St Michael on Wyre
*** There is a Margaret baptism 10 Feb 1739 at Poulton to James, husbandman of Thornton. I also found a William and Elizabeth both baptised 1 Mar 1746 at Poulton to James, residence Stening.

They had a son, William, baptised 24 Feb 1765 at Stalmine.

William married Jenny Bateson 8 Apr 1792 at St Michael on Wyre.

I believe Jenny was baptised 14 May 1769 at Thornton in Lonsdale to Robert and Agnes (née Walmsley). Walmsleys also crop up further down the Swarbrick-Redman tree. I believe my Batesons are from Burton in Lonsdale.

More digging to do!  :)

i forgot to add: this Redman Swarbrick line descends to a Ben Swarbrick whom I have a DNA match with so it must be relevant I think.
