Re: Evans - UPDATE help needed
« Reply #18 on: Saturday 03 August 19 22:42 BST (UK) »
Hi guys, I know its been years but i am the original poster for this thread (new username) and I don't know if anyone will see this but I am still slightly stuck with this family. I have ordered the marriage certificate for Margaret Evans and James Evans (although its transcribed as Evanes) and it states James' father as Charles Evans, who's profession was a groom.
Now I have found a family that seem's to fit in 1861;
Epsom, Surrey
Name   Age
Charles Evans   36
Jane Evans   37
Charles Evans   12
Jane Evans   11
William R Evans   8
Arthur H Evans   4
James Evans   1
Thomas Holloway   46

and I would obviously like to order a birth certificate to confirm it's the right family. However I am stuck as I can't find a way to guarantee that the James Evans I have found in 1861 is the same one as mine that came to Wales. Anyone got any ideas on how to try and confirm they are one in the same?
Sorry for the long post.

Diolch

have you tried following that Evans family in the census? I can see that Jane died aged 44 jun qtr 1868 Epsom. Also, the older children seem to be working in 1871 in the Epsom area - William & Arthur Holloway are stable boys, Jane is a cook.
Arthur Holloway married 31 Jan 1886 in Marylebone to Martha Elizabeth Walters, his father noted as Charles Evans, coachman. One of the witnesses is a J Evans. Could be James, could be Jane. The parish entry can be accessed on Ancestry, it's in the LMA records. You could compare the signatures.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage of your James?

thanks for the reply! yeah I have looked into the family and they all do seem to stay in the epsom/london area. I mean the plus side is there doesn't seem to be any sign of James in london so maybe it is my one then.
Witness to James' marriage was Benjamin Phillips and Ann Davies - so no luck there. I will try and delve a bit deeper into the family as i can't seem to find Charles jnr after 1871 so maybe he came to Wales aswell?
I've just noticed that the year of birth is slightly out for James, his age in 1891/1901/1911 is stated as 1862/63 but he's showing up on 1861 census with this family, dunno if that's enough to think its the wrong family or not?

he may have 'lost' a few years as he married a younger woman.
