Place name in Bedfordshire
« on: Thursday 31 May 12 18:04 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where this name is referring to?
It was in the 1901 census for
Charles Stock, he is recorded as being born in
1860 Coal Cokemmas, Bedfordshire.

He died 1903 so I didn't get another chance to
see his birthplace. In 1891 census he is recorded as
being born in Raunds, but that has not led to anything.

Thanks, Carole

BIRD of Broughton, Northants
SMITH of Stanwick, Irchester, Kettering, Northants
YORKE of North Beds & Hargrave, Raunds, Northants

Do you have his marriage certificate to give a father's name and then look in earlier census years?

Carole, That's not a place I have ever heard of.    The Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Record Service (BLARS) hold the parish registers for the Bedford Area and having a quick look down the list there is a place called

Cockayne Hatley
which would probably be pronounced locally as Cockayne atley, which is about as near as I can get to a suggestion of a 'misheard' placename.

There is a Charles Stock registered in March 1861 Volume 3b Page 299 District of  Bedford on www.freebmd.org.uk which seems like a possibility, perhaps sending for the birth cert might solve the problem.

The 1861 birth registration may be the birth in Turvey of Charles Clement Stock, who can be traced in censuses and who isn't the one in Raunds. A safer bet would be the marriage cert as suggested by Carol.

His census ages varied - there's another Bedford registration in the Sept quarter 1858 which could equally be him, assuming of course that he was born in Bedford registration district, which is by no means certain

There's a Cold Brayfield just outside Turvey (but it's not that) so the first word might be Cold. I've been through my list of Beds parishes and hamlets and absolutely nothing looks anything remotely like Cokkemas

I wondered about Colworth.....near Sharnbrook,as it's in north beds not far from the Northants border. But the second part of the word seems to be Thomas?

Carol
