Friedrich Wilhelm LEHMANN b. abt 1879 South Australia
« on: Thursday 31 May 12 13:49 BST (UK) »
I am interested in Friedrich Wilhelm Lehmann who was the husband of my great-grandmother sister, Elsie New,  and specifically where and when he died.

Friedrich was married to Elsie in NSW in 1911,   and he was described as a widower, aged 32,  indicating her was born around 1879.   He was born at Edinburg (  probably actually Edithburg ) South Australia.

I was told that Elsie died in 1978 although she actually appears to have died in 1971.  The NSW BDM death registration index entry would appear to have the wrong names for her parents for some unknown reason.

Friedrich's name appears in some records as either Lehmann or Lehman  and sometimes as Frederick William Lehmann.

I can't find any record of his death anywhere.

Thats probably the one.   She was born at the Sydney Benevolent Asylum in January of 1893.  Her mother's name was Elizabeth.    The actual identity of her father is somewhat uncertain,   Elizabeth was married but may have been separated for quite some time.

I have her 1911 marriage certificate to Friedrich Lehmann,   I've haven't got the 1971 death certificate yet because the index claims her parents names were Donald and Marian,  which is either wrong or it is a different person.   Also,  her grandson insists that she passed away in 1977 or 1978.

Elizabeth died on 5th April 1931,  Elsie Lehmann put the ad in the paper inviting her friends to the funeral.  The death certificate says Elsie was an only child although Elizabeth had seven children of whom 4 were still living long after 1931.

Hmm interesting,   so that is the right one then,  because I know the names of at least some of her children.   It doesn't mention her husband at all.

So the puzzle remains,  what happened to her husband ?

Do you know what her husband's occupation was?

It should be on their marriage certificate.

It would appear that their eldest son Alex was born in 1910 at Gundagai  and his birth appears to have been registered under the name of New,   although he later went by the name Alex Lehmann.

I've also found about 4 different apparent addresses for this family all within a very small radius of Crows Nest in Sydney in the 1920s period.

I have never been able to find any death for this Friedrich Lehmann   and I could not find any first marriage for him either,   although I probably didnt search exhaustively for it,  its a bit peripheral to my connection.

Alexander's birth was registered again in 1924 as LEHMANN.  He disappears from the NSW electoral rolls after 1937.

Walter and another son served in WW2.  Unfortunately their service records are not digitised at the NAA; they often have correspondence as to why the father is not named as next of kin.
