I think Merlin found that 1896 dc after Jamjar found the 1894 burial  :)  I found the 1888 dc for an Ellen Montgomery registered in the East Macquarie district.

I cannot find Nancy OSBORNE arriving in Australia with or without her possible grandson, Edward Augustus FERGUSON.....

NSW Government Gazette  number 466 of Wednesday 13 Nov  1839 has an unclaimed letter for an Ann OSBORNE  received during the months of October 1839 and held as at 1 Nov 1839 at the Sydney GPO.

The NSW Govt Gazette up to 1839 is free to search via RChat’s VIC Resources Board :

Of course there’s NO way to tell from that listing IF that Ann OSBORNE could be Nancy OSBORNE nee Sproule.

I wonder if there's resources at the National Library of Australia in CANBERRA that may have further clues as to IF and/or WHEN Nancy was in Australia?  I mention this as Princess41's profile shows she is located in Canberra.

Hi everyone and thanks for your posts.

I can tell you what I have records for that have been researched and verified and I have reference numbers.
These have been obtained just in the past few months.

I will start with the Ferguson's.

There were two marriages for William King Ferguson.  He was born abt 1763.  His first marriage was to Hanna Wilson (born possibly 28 February 1777) in Crossmolina and was buried 26 May 1830 in the cemetery at Drumachose Church (of England).

William King Ferguson then married Ellen Jane Osborne 17 November 1837 at Bovevagh Presbyterian Church.  In the records it shows William H Ferguson & Ellenor Osborne.  Witnesses were Joe Barnett and Wm Ritchie.  William King Ferguson was a Slater & Glazier, (not a hatter).

Edward Augustus Ferguson born 4 September 1838 was christened on 23 September 1838 in Drumachose Christchurch CI Limavady.  His Parents were William King Ferguson & Ellen Jane Ferguson of Kennaught.

Willaim King Ferguson died 28 September 1839, a year after Edward's birth.  His age was 76. Records Drumachose Christchurch CI.   buried by Robert Gage.

For Ellen Jane these details are taken off her death certificate.  She was born Ellen Jane Osborne circa 1818 Inneskillen. Father Joseph Osborne Farmer & Mother Nancy Sproule.  She was 55 years in the colony. She died in Nowra 11 July 1896 stating she was 78.  On her death certificate it states she had two marriages.  The first 18 years of age to Ferguson and had one child Edward Augustus Ferguson. The children below are listed under her second marriage to Henry Montgomery.  The informant on Ellen Jane's death was her eldest daughter Anne.  I now have regular contact with one of GG Grandaughters of Ellen Jane & Henry.  Both her and I share Ellen Jane as our GG Grandma.

After she became a Ferguson in 1837 & her husband William King Ferguson died in 1939 she married Henry Montgomery born circa 1820 place Balteagh, Londonderry.  Henry Montgomery's Parents were James Montgomery & Mary Lochery.  Ellen Jane Ferguson & Henry Montgomery married 9 October 1840 in Limavady.

14 April 1841 Ellen Jane & Henry arrive in Australia on the James Mathieson.  Henry was a Stonecutter & Ellen Jane a Dairywoman.  Edward Augustus Ferguson did not accompany them.  Their first child born in Australia was Ann Gordon born 30 June 1841 in Jerrawanglo NSW.  She then had Ellen S.F.,  Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine, Jane, Hannah, Henry, Agnes, Deborah, Rebecca, Nancy.

The shipping records states Ellen Jane Montgomery was 18 in 1840 but we all know dates can be out by a few years.  The person certifying Ellen's baptism was Stern and Ellen could read.  It also says she was a native of Tillydrimmy.  Henry Montgomery's shipping records states he was a native of Beliamully and his baptism by Stern P. Minister.

Both Ellen's & Henry's Fathers were dead when they came to Australia.

Getting back to my Great Grandfather Edward Augustus Ferguson, past family said he was raised by his Grandmother and came to Australia with her at the age of 16.  The only Grandma I could think it would be is Nancy Osborne nee Sproule.  Maybe she married again.

Please know I do truly appreciate all your help.  I hope that this post makes things more clear than all my previous posts when I started researching.

Glenys

Can we somehow attach this post to the research I have been doing in Derry.  It will help to clarify information there also.

"There is no positive evidence that Nancy was is Australia but written down in the family history way back it states that Edward Augustus Ferguson came to Australia with his Grandmother.  Now both the Grandparents on the Ferguson side were dead.  One dying in 1830 and the other in 1839.  "

I find this a bit baffling.  Edward Augustus Ferguson's  Ferguson grandparents were the Parents of William King Ferguson,  who you say was born about 1763 ?   So William King Ferguson's parents died in 1830 and 1839 ?  They were, like, 100 years old ?

I am wondering if you somehow skipped a generation.  I know that 17 year old women sometimes marry 74 year old men,  but not very often,  and not unless they were very rich.

If Ellen Jane's mother was going to take off to Australia,   and bring her grandson with her,  then surely she would be heading to live with her daughter  and not in some completely different place.

You mentioned he was about 16 years old,   that would tie in with the peak of gold fever.

It is a bit of a long shot,  but there is an E A Montgomery, steward, from Ireland, arriving in 1854.

It is not unknown for the child of a father who dies when the child is very young,  to start using the name of its mother's second husband.

Thanks for your thoughts.  I believe Edward always knew his name as Edward Augustus Ferguson because it has been written as that on all correspondence and certificates.  Ellen Jane's DC states 1st child Edward Augustus Ferguson. Edward's DC states his Mum Ellen Jane Osborne.  Edward had a secondary education and was a great reader and writer.  Apparently when he died he left a large suitcase of writings and books behind...only to be thrown out by a family member.  How often do we hear this story and imagine what would have been in there.  History again gone on the rubbish heap.

Re. the William King Ferguson we always believed there to be two but research is suggesting that there may have only been the one and that she married an old guy.  I have someone in N Ireland looking into it so hopefully that will be sorted out.

Edward Augustus Ferguson wife lived to be in her 90's and had a lot to do with the family, being her children and grandchildren.  When the family history was written down decades ago they were definite about the facts. My brother talked to one of them at some length about it decades ago and he clearly remembers his Mum telling him what we have written down.

I wonder whether Edward ever visited his Mother in NSW.  Maybe he never knew where she was or if she was alive.  Maybe they didn't want him there or maybe he said hello and felt unwanted and moved on.  In the family history it states " He grew up in a broken home and left as he wasn't happy and moved to Australia with his Grandmother at the age of 16."  Perhaps we will never know anymore.

Would someone please see if they can find a record for my GGG Grandmother Nancy Osborne (nee Sproule).
Not sure of a birth date but probably somewhere between 1790 and 1800 in I

She may have come to Australia from Nth. Ireland around mid 1850's and to Victoria or NSW.  I don't know if she died in Australia or returned to Nth. Ireland. I think if she came to Australia she probably stayed and died here.  Her husband was Joseph Osborne and he died back in Ireland.

A wild guess could be around Burrier NSW but it is only a guess.  Family rumour said Victoria.

Any help here is appreciated.

Thanks.

Glenys

I am not sure where to post this, as there have been many many thread looking for Princess' elusive Edward Augustus Ferguson....

I have just come across the immigration papers for Henry Montgomery and his wife, Ellen Jane, assisted passengers on the James Mathieson, arriving Sydney NSW April 1841.   The information there shows that Ellen Jane's parents were Joseph OSBORNE and his wife Nancy SPROULE.  Nancy Sproule is noted as dead on the document I have sighted (it is part of the NSW SRO holdings) (I interpret this to mean that Nancy died at sometime during Ellen's life in Ireland, perhaps years and years before Ellen migrated or perhaps the same year as Ellen boarded the ship)....

Also the paperwork required the couple (Henry and Ellen Jane) to provide details for "Male children, exceeding one, and under eighteen years" and "Female children, exceeding one, and under fifteen years".   On Ellen Jane's documents those two sections are blank.

Cheers,  JM
