COMPLETED - Famous industrialist connected with Corfe Castle?
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 20:28 BST (UK) »
I am researching my Kyrke cousins in North Wales and have come across a connundrum.

Henry Kyrke SMITH (b 29 November 1851) was the youngest child of Edward SMITH. With a name like Edward SMITH, I didn't give much to my chances but the 1851 census has him aged 51 years, a brewer in Islington Liverpool but born Corfe Castle, Dorset. His age is confirmed by his age at the time of his death (and by his entry in the 1841 census).

But why name his son Kyrke?

Well the only lead I have is that there is a birth/christening (4 Feb 1809, 20 June 1809) I found on IGI (not seen the film yet) at the Presbyterian Chapel, Wareham, giving his father as Charles Roe SMITH.

Now Charles ROE (b 1715 Castleton Derbyshire) was an important industrialist based in Macclesfield who happened to be in business with my  Kyrkes and whose grand-daughter married a Kyrke. So I am thinking another marriage between a male Roe and one of my Kyrkes, offspring Sarah marrying George SMITH, parents of Charles Roe SMITH of Challow Farm, Corfe Castle!

The 'fly in the ointment' is that there was a local (Dorset/Devon) Roe family that would be the obvious origin of the Sarah ROE whom I think married George SMITH. And no link that I have found between the industrialist George ROE, born Derbyshire, ancestry in Shropshire and the Dorset Roes.

Does anyone know the ancestry of this Charles Roe SMITH (1775-1809)?

This site claims to know something of Charles Roe Smith. I'm not sure how accurate it is as the Corfe Castle records show a Charles Roe Smith dying in 1809 whereas this one emigrates to the USA. There is also no mention of Henry Kyrke Smith.

Ooh...
These are extracts from what I found in the paper.

I thought  this Edward Smith  in the article may have been linked to Charles Roe Smith clockmaker ,  your  Edward was born about 1809 ,  so looking at the date of the 1835 article then the Bangor Edward Smith would have to have been about 26.

North Wales Chronicle (Bangor, Wales), April 21, 1835
Notice to creditors, Charles Roe Smith of Bangor , gunmaker and clockmaker  etc etc ----  persons who stand indebted to pay amount of debts to Edward Smith , Flour merchant Bangor.

May 10, 1836
A John Williams has moved in to the premises in Castle Street, Bangor , previously occupied by Charles Roe Smith.

Just a thought  ;)

So the story may be that Charles Roe SMITH senior or junior (or both) moved to North Wales with elder brother Edward SMITH. Then in 1835 Charles Roe SMITH senior moved to Pennsylvania.

The email for David Scannel, author of the familytreemaker link, unfortunately doesn't work, not too surprising, given the posting date of 2002. PS have sent him a personal message via Facebook

Many thanks June.

I knew the mother of the above Charles Roe SMITH was Sarah.

I hadn't found the 1790 census that you have pointed me to; it proves Charles mother was born Sarah ROE and Sarah's parents were Charles and Susannah (nee Gardiner). Then with the parish register I can trace the Roe family in the area back to the marriage of Robert ROE to Elizabeth BROOKS, 1704.

The paternal grandfather of Charles ROE the industrialist of Macclesfield, Robert ROE, was born Arleston, Shropshire abt 1646.

Could there be a link between the Corfe Castle Roes and the Shropshire Roes?

Adnepos,

A pleasure to help. I am not sure how one would go about tracing the connection with Shropshire.

All the best with your search,

Roy (June's husband)

Thank you Roy

I'll try the Shropshire Board!

If anything positive comes out, I'll post something here.
