Question about Last Names on Death Record
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 19:19 BST (UK) »
On the Scotland's People site, I noticed that alot of the listings say it is not permissable to list the mother's surname. I was wondering if anyone could explain that (why). And also could you tell me what the other surnames would be on this listing:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Search/results.aspx

I am assuming one would be Catherine's maiden name, which was Smith. What might the other one be? The name of the informant perhaps?

Nevermind. It appears that Moiser was her husband's last name. She must have kept the last name McManus when the got married.

There are two reasons why mother's maiden name is not displayed - in some older records the name has not yet been indexed; in more recent records it does not appear for reasons of security.  If you look on the Scotland's People website at the search page for deaths you'll find a link to "important information regarding mother's surname".

The "other surnames" would show up if someone had been married more than once.  In Scotland, the maiden name would always appear in the index too (as long as it was known).

She must have kept the last name McManus when the got married.

Legally, a woman in Scotland retains her maiden name throughout her life. This is why the death of a married woman in Scotland is always (well, nearly always!) indexed under both her own name and her husband's name, and why the mother's name in the pre-1855 baptism indexes, if given at all, is usually her full maiden name.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
