Found Bottle Bank Photos for you !!
« Reply #9 on: Monday 22 August 05 10:31 BST (UK) »
I had a look last night on the net to see what I could find for you.

Have you tried-              www.picturesofgateshead.co.uk

It has one photo which doesn't quite manage to show Bottle Bank itself, just the street at the bottom of it, but it does give you an idea of the area.

It is peeing down today, but I am due to go to Gateshead within the next week, so I will try my best to go on a sunny day for you.

Please don't buy the book until you see the photos I send you. I don't want you wasting your money if I can do the same as the book. I know I haven't got a Tardis and cannot go back in time, to take a photo of when your ancestor was alive !!

Perhaps you could phone the publisher and ask if Bottle Bank is shown in the book, before you buy ?

I can try going to Gateshead Library to see if they have any photos of Bottle Bank and take a photo of the photo ???????!!!!!!

Let me know what you want.

Cheers,

VAL

Thanks for both those links.  I've been pottering around them and found them most useful.  Bottlebank looks a bit bleak now, I dread to think what it was like in 1869.  I'm wondering if the buildings were built before of after this date.

Also, the other website with photo's of North East England.  Brilliant.  Photos of Blyth, Cowpen and the cemetaries.  In fact a lot of the areas I have found mentioned on certificates.

I've followed Bob's lead and asked for an order form.  However I had to go through varying 'auto' links to get to it, so not sure what will be the end result at the moment.

It is wonderful to get a feel of an area.  The gentleman I have particularly linked with Bottle Bank died age 40 of exhaustion following two years of paraplegia.  He was a whitesmith with a family dependent on him.  Placing him in his environmental context makes his life even more tragic and really shows  me what our ancestors were up against.

Thank you both for your help.  It is very much appreciated.

Andrew & KA,
I looked at the 'Gateshead Pubs' site - it's great! Didn't know it was there!
The best 'Bottle Bank' pic is actually before 'The Goat' - the one of 'The Full Moon' shows the buildings as they were pre 1925 - and shows how steep the hill was!
Thanks Andrew! Good luck KA!

Bob Lewis.

Hi

Pleased to be of help.

I haddn't seen that one, I was looking for one in Springwell

I'll say one thing though I wouldn't like to come out of that pub after a few, come th think of it going there would be bad enough and youl'd need a drink when you got there, but coming out after a skinfull.

I wonder if there is any photos of pubs in Whitehaven, there used to be hundreds, Well about 80

Lets think:

The Albion Scotch St, Albion Hotel King St, Anchor Vaults Ginns, Anchor Vaults Market Place (the last one I got into a fight in), Anchor Inn George St ............. Whittington Cat Lowther St, and so on... I see a project here

I still like looking at them from the inside, preferably through a glass
