Where is this place?
« on: Saturday 21 May 05 09:17 BST (UK) »
I've just received a death certificate dated 1869.

The deceased died at 'Bottle Bank, Gateshead'.

Could somebody with a greater knowledge of the area than I have be able to tell me where Bottle Bank was located and what type of area it was.

Regards

KA

Hi,
Bottle bank is between the Tyne Bridge and High Level Bridge. You should be able to find it on a map. It's in the area of the 'great explosion' in the 1850s. Gatashead council website has facts, figures and links.   Regards Steve

Hello KA,
Just to amplify a little on what kaja told you - 'Bottle Bank' is/was a narrow street which went VERY steeply down from the Foot of Gateshead High Street (North end) to the Swing Bridge.
Before the 'Tyne Bridge' was built (1920s?) it was the centre of a very poor slum area - most of it was demolished to make way for the new bridge but the West side was still standing in the 1940/50s. It looked rough even then!
In the last few years that, too, has been demolished and a new hotel built on the site - the 'Newcastle Hilton'! (Even though it's in Gateshead!)
I don't think they'll give their address as 'Bottle Bank'!
Regards.     Bob Lewis.

Bob,

Thanks eversomuch for that.  I do appreciate it.

It's nice to be able to get the feel for the names of places on certificates. It can tell so much.  And what you describe, and knowing the ancestor concerned was a paraplegic gives me an insight to the tough life that must have been experienced.

Many thanks

KA

If you give me a short while (2-3 weeks), I can get you a photo. (Waiting for camera to be delivered !)
Mail me privately, with your email address and I will send it to you.

I am sure that there will be some local history pages that have a photo of circa the time period you want, if you do a net search.

Best,

Val   :)
ATTACHMENTS

Bridge 1 photo has the new SAGE building on the left. If you were to 'turn left as the crow flies' and continue off picture, then bottle bank is further left. Bottle Bank is a very short, steep bank. It is a one way street these days.
I was told by relatives that it used to be where the ladies of the night worked, in the 1970's-1980s.

Bridge 2 is the reverse. Newcastle on left, Gateshead side on right. Just to give you an idea.

Cheers,
VAL

Hello KA,
Since posting the note to you on here on 16.06.2005 I have found that if I'd stretched my left arm by a couple of feet I could have found 4 photographs of Bottle Bank!
Not sure what your present position is but I'll give you the detials anyway:
They are in a book called 'Images of Tyneside', published by 'The Breedon Books Publishing Company Limited, 44,Friar Gate, Derby. DE1 1DA' in 1995.
It seems to have been published for the 'Newcastle Journal & Chronicle Ltd.' -the local newspaper outfit.
There is a note at the front saying, 'To purchase copies of these archive photographs telephone the N  J & C, Photosales dept., on 0191-2016001 to request an order form.'
The relevant pics are on pages 163: 1) Beyond the bridge.  2) Extreme left.   164: Whole page.  166: Upper - directly behind the ladder!
If you are not in the UK and still want 'em, let me know and I'll do what I can to get 'em for you - or try and find a nice neighbour with a scanner!
Regards.         Bob Lewis.

Bob,

Thanks for that.  I'm in the UK.  I'll give the number a call and see what transpires. I'll let you know.  If I get no joy I'll get back to you.  But hopefully they can send me an order form.

Thanks very much for your help.

Regards
