Hi ladies and gents, thank you so much for tackling my Hoskins. I have been a long time replying as I was trying to make sure I had all the right details.
I have been able to tie in some ends and discount some details - all to the good.
To Carole, my husband is the great grandson of William. In the 41 census William Hoskin / Hosking states he was born Llangennith, 51 doesn't actually show anything, 61 cannot find him as I have now discounted the possible census that I had. 71 Llangennith (I think) or could be Llangennech and 81 just states Wales.
I now believe that William's father was a butcher AND a farmer, whatever he felt like at the time as:
In 41 census Thomas was 71, Tile house - farmer
51 - 81 Tile House, farmer of 6 acres
Williams marriage cert - butcher
61 - 91 Tile House Butchers House 90 butcher
It does indeed look as though William and Thomas both had two wives. with poor Mary losing most if not all of her children. There's a Robert christened Llanmadock 1816 and according to the 41 census a 15 y o Robert born approx 1826 - this one must be Janes. Mary 1817 and Mary 1818, neither of which are on the 41 census but the latter could have got married by then. and then Amelia b 1821 and also 1828 which must have been Jane's child again, plus of course the unfortunate baby twin Jane.
In the 1871 census William has two children in the family which are too old to be those of his wife Jane. Ellen 1854 and William 1857. I have not been able to track any of then in the 61 census so don't know who his "then" wife was or whether she had died by then
I am sorry if this has all come out a bit disjointed, - it's been a long day.
