Hello, my mothers maiden name was Sarah Ellen Rattigan, my mother married Jack Wellington Hirst. I believe her father lost his leg in the 1st world war and on his return was employed as a fruit and vegetable seller by a horse and cart, his name was Martin Rattigan, her mothers maiden name was Edith Vickerman and they lived in Prospect Street Huddersfield. Maybe you can back trace the information by contacting Kirklees Council Births and Deaths. Its many years ago since she and my mother died so I am going on my memory and at 76 Years its not that good. Hope this is the information you was looking for.

Best Regards,
Geoffrey Hirst.

Welcome to RootsChat - Geoffrey.  ;D

Unfortunately this is an old topic, and neither Marlene nor Fozgraven have been on-line for a number of years.  However, your information may well be of use to others.

Good luck and if we can be of any help to you in your family research, then please feel free to start a new topic with your question/s.

Geoffrey,

this would be your Mother's birth reference:

Births September quarter 1911
Sarah E Rattigan  mmn  Vickerman  Huddersfield    9a   555

There were more Rattigan/Vickerman births in Huddersfield in 1921 and 1924 (Blanche and Eileen).

Martin's surname, at marriage, appears to have been recorded as Rocktigan

Added:
more Rocktigan/Vickerman births in Huddersfield 1913 - 1919, Alice, Edith, Annie, Irene and Agnes.

Martin and Edith and family showing on 1939.

Martin appears in various newspaper reports, not all of them favourably.  He appears to have lost a leg at some stage.

Hello, Family! I just came across this thread from years ago and wanted to chime in. I am the great granddaughter of Margaret Ellen Rattigan. She is the daughter of Martin and Winifred Rattigan, so I guess I am the great, great granddaughter of Martin and Winifred. This part of the family settled in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, USA. It would be lovely to find other family out there! Cheers to the Rattigans :)
