Birt/Lloyd marriage 1877
« on: Friday 25 May 12 13:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me find out if the Susan Lloyd (born 1825 Marden, Hereford and died 1881) who married Edward Birt (born 1834 Norton, Gloucestershire) in 1877 in Hereford, was previously married, and if so to whom?

Thank you
Maggie

Hi Maggie

The marriage is on the old IGI & the new Family Search - an extracted record.

Susan LLOYD, father: Major LLOYD
Edward BIRT, father: William BIRT

This indicates she wasn't married before, perhaps?

Have you any other documentation  - aside from 1881 Census that has her age as 56 & consistent with a ~1825 birthyear?

In 1881, she & Edward (age 50) are in Sutton (which is in Hereford registration district) , address: Lower House (for ref: family of Henry Chadney nearby).  RG11 /  Piece: 2592 /  Folio: 67 /  Page: 13

In 1891, Edward is at the same address (age 59) with a new wife named Emma (age 44).  (for ref: family of Henry Chadney nearby). RG12 / Piece: 2060 / Folio: 161 / Page: 10;

The only suitable death on FREEMDN that  I can see, is:
Hereford, Sep Qtr 1881 - Susan BIRT age 77.

And a re-marriage for Edward, Mar Qtr 1891, Hereford:
Edward BIRT
Emma CONSTABLE (only two names on page per FreeBMD).

Could Susan have been 20 yrs the senior of Edward!?  If she was, then 1841 Census for MArden  has:  Major LLOYD age 70,  Ann LLOYD 60, Susannah LLOYD 30, William LLOYD  25.

Which is:  Baptism in Marden 23 Aug 1807, Susannah LLOYD
Father: Major LLOYD, Mother Ann

Cheers

Hi Ambly,
Now that is interesting as I remember seeing a Major Lloyd and thinking what a strange christian name. Now I have to remember where I saw it. Probably when looking at the 1841 census. Unfortunatley I have nothing other than the 1881 census to go on as Edward Birt was the relation I was researching when I found all his marriages. Susan's being one of them. Edward Birt seems to have married 4 times. He got through his wives quite quickly although the last out lived him.

Thanks for your prompt reply
Maggie

1861 Census Susan is born c 1816, Mardon, Herefordshire. Down as a Unm Relative of John BAILY born 1788, Sutton.
RG9/1818/151/3

I did notice a Major Phillips age 8 in the Family nearby. Parents Richard/Elizabeth. At this stage cant find a connection as Elizabeth seems to be nee Duggan.

1851 she is born c 1811, Marden, still with John Bailey c 1788.

IGI has a Submitted Marriage for Major LLOYD/Ann CLARKE, 07 June 1792, Bodenham, Hereford.

Thanks Trish and Ambly

I am wondering if there is another generation with Major Lloyd in it who could be Susan's father as the one Ambly refers to is quite old. Also Susan's age at marriage would be 70 if we took the 1807 baptism. Not that that is a problem as such but seems a little odd if Edward Birt was 43.

This seems to be an interesting search!
Thanks Maggie  :)

Ambly and Trish

I have been through the census details for 1851,1861 and 1871 where Susan Lloyd is staying with John Bailey. (John Bailey died in 1875 and Susan Lloyd is stated on the Will.) The address on the 1871 is Lower House where Susan is living. I decided to look at where Edward Birt was living in 1881 with Susan and it looks like he moved into the house where she was listed in the 1871 census, that of Lower House. Therefore it looks like the Susan Lloyd born 1811 as stated on the 1851,1861 and 1871 is the wife of Edward Birt, but on the 1881 census she is stated as having a birth date of 1825.

So the date of baptism of 1807 looks like it is the right one.

If I am right and the address is the same for the 1871 and 1881 citations then it looks like I have found the answer to whether or not Susan Lloyd was married before she married Edward Birt.

Thanks for your help
Maggie
