Frances Woolrich Wharton - help please
« on: Friday 25 May 12 05:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I'm looking for any details regarding one Frances Woolrich Wharton born in Tattenhall around 1819 - particularly relating to birth and parentage. I believe but can't confirm that she may have married one Richard Lawson of Handley around 1832. :-\

Any information, help or suggestions would be gratefully received

thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

That is correct.
Richard Lawson married Frances Woolrich Wharton on 31st December 1832
at St Johns, Chester

Where her birth is I dont know unfortunately.  I have looked on a few of my
sites and cannot find such a distinctive middle name.  Could be she was illegitimate
as the Mother would add the surname of the man as the middle name if they
were not getting married?

So maybe she might not have been registered until later as it was not against
the law to register until about 1870's.

www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb has the marriage - click database - marriage and put in Lawson
at St John The Baptist, Chester
Richard was a a bachelor - Labourer  - and signed - full age
Frances was a spinster - full age - signed with an X
witness George Ince  and Benjamin Linney
married by W Richard - curate around 1819..
So ...if Frances was full age in 1832 ...take 21 years away and she has to be born 1811 or earlier ????...not 1819 ( that would make her 13 in 1832 )
No baptism for a Frances Wharton - let me check Frances Woolrich
back soon

I think I have found her ...looks like a Mistranscription on her marriage to me

Frances Wilderridge Warton born 10th september 1810 in Tattenhall
baptised 21st October 1810 in Tattenhall
mother Alice Warton
no father

so...no H in the Wharton ?  and middle name is Wilderridge
Frances Woolrich Wharton  born Tattenhall
Frances Wilderridge Warton born Tattenhall
the birth year fits perfectly for full age at her marriage in 1832
but I will leave the decision to you ...looks like her to me ...anyone any thoughts ???

Great work Allan & Sandy - thanks so much for taking the time to have a look for me.

I would agree that the probability is that Frances Wilderridge Warton and Frances Woolrich Wharton are one and the same person. I'm guessing that Widerridge is probably the surname of the unknown father as Sandy surmised.

At least I now have some new avenues to explore

thanks again

Kind regards

Dave

Hi all

A couple of years on from my original request I think that Frances Woolrich W(h)arton is the correct name of this young lady. Woolrich appears to be a fairly common surname around the Chester area whereas Wilderridge does not bring up hits anywhere.

So, my next question is since we know her mother was Alice W(h)arton - is there anyone who can suggest how I might find more about her assuming a birth around 1790 (Frances was born in 1810)?

thanks & regards

Dave

Hiya Dave ...can only find one in the area that might fit
Alice Wharton born 27th aug 1787 Oxton ,Cheshire
baptised 23rd oct 1787 Woodchurch Parish
father Thomas - a Farmer
mother Elizabeth
Oxton - Tattenhall is 25 miles ....but if Thomas was a farmer this is not far for a Farmer to travel for work ...
IF - you think this may be your Alice Wharton ??
Woodchurch Parish - 4th oct 1776 - Thomas Wharton to Elizabeth Lester
Thomas Wharton - a bachelor Farmer from West Kirkby - full age
Elizabeth Lester - spinster from Woodchurch Parish ( probably Oxton )- a minor -so under 21
both signed
witness
Joseph Wharton
Martha Spark
....................................................................................
Elizabeth Lester bapt 15th aug 1757 at Woodchurch Parish   - abode Oxton
father Richard Lester occ Husbandman
mother Mary
Richard and Mary married 26th july 1756 same parish and Marys maiden name was SPARK ...
Richard Lester was 26 and Mary Spark was 22

that`s IF - we have the right Alice Wharton ....definitely looks a possible to me though

Thanks for the response Garstonite - I agree that the Alice you have described is a distinct possibility - and gives me some further avenues for exploration which is much appreciated.

Are you aware of any on-line resources that could help in a search for a potential marriage for this Alice? I know it's a long-bow to hope that she eventually married the unknown Woolrich who gave his name to Frances but it's worth a try.

If anyone has records of the Woolrich family in or close toTattenhall I would appreciate any info you feel able to relate.

thanks again

JD

thanks again

Dave.
