Many thanks Kris - this is the first lead I have had - the 1871 census lists his birthplace as Kingswinford and he does have a 19 year old daughter in 1871, suggesting he married in at least 1851 or 1852 but West Midlands BMD has no record of a Foley marrying in the years 1849 - 1853.

Free BMD has an Edward Foley marrying a Rebecca Shepherd in 1850 in Bradford but I doubt these are the same couple, unless they were on the canals by then which would mean the Edward you have found would be out of the frame.

Time to think.

Best Wishes
David

MMM Interesting David...I C your delema....I just had a look at that 1871 entry really doesnt say much except as u say he does have a 19 year old born Bilston  ??? (I look at my man but really he should be married) and a wife Rebecca which then makes me think that the man I found is not yours and as u say yours may have been on the canals by then.... interesting u have found a marriage to a Rebecca...I have had nothing to do with boat people but expect they would not be easy to trace and seeing an 11 year old b Worcestershire they may not be in Warwick in 1861 either...Sorry I couldnt b more help

All the best....Kris  :D

Pre 1871 census lookup please Foley family boatpeople.
« Reply #4 on: Saturday 19 February 05 13:53 GMT (UK) »
I have confirmed links back to the Foley family of boatpeople who are recorded in the 1871 census in West Bromwich as:

Edward Foley,  54,  Boatman,  born Kingswinford
Rebecca Foley  51,  Boatwoman, born Coleshill (?)
Keziah Foley,    19,  Boatwoman,  born Bilston
Phoebe Foley,   16,  Boatwoman,  born Bilston
Joseph Foley,    14,  Boatman,  born Bilston
Georrge Foley   11,  Boatman,  born  Dudley
Samuel Foley,  7       Boatman,  born Oldbury
David Foley,     4,  Boatman,  born Bilston.

On the 1871 census, page RG10/2986, there is no mention of any address, boat, vessel, losdging place - nothing!. It is the same on the previous page and the following page.

I have had no joy in any area pre 1871 - any help, information, advice or guidance would be very much appreciated. Edward was my great great grandfather.

Best Wishes
David

Have you got any of the birth certificates for the children?   Some were born around census time and just may show where they were then - probably a vain hope but you never know.   I believe there is a Society for boat and canal people.   There is certainly a museum somewhere as I have read an article about it.
Good luck!

No I don't have any birth certificates yet - I can't track down an entry for birth for Kezia(h) Foley on either Free BMD or West Midlands BMD. I have a possible lead on Phoebe. There is a birth registered for Joseph Foley in Dudley around the right time on 1837 online but the page entry is almost impossible to read. Confusingly, there is another Joseph Foley born around the same time whose birth details I have but it is not my Joseph Foley.

All my attempts with the Boatpeople mailing lists have not brought any success so far.

I have a possible wedding of an Edward Foley and Rebecca Reeves in 1837 but in the quarter before Free BMD and West Midlands BMD have accessible records.

So I'm stuck at the moment.

Best Wishes
David

If you search in 1837online , 1861 census, for Foley and occupation boatman you will find Joseph Foley , 28 and Samuel Foley 50, both living in Dudley which is close to Kingswinford and West Bromwich. Hope this helps
