I am trying to find info on the family background of Elizabeth Burgess :), who was a famous opera singer, born in Ashton Under Lyne in 1869. If anyone is researching her I have some photos and a lot of info on her career.

You may want to check out the Surname Interest Table (click on the "Surname" tag at the top of the page).  There are lots of members researching this surname.  Phil

Hell Jan..

And welcome to Rootschat.

I think this is your girl, with her family, on the 1871 census.

131, Queen Street, Ashton under Lyne

Burgess Thomas / head / age 42 / born Ashton
Burgess Mary A / wife / age 39 / born Ashton
Burgess James / son / age 17 / Cotton piecer / born Ashton
Burgess Sarah / daughter age 10
Burgess Christiana / daughter / age 8
Burgess Joseph / son / age 5
BURGESS ELIZABETH / daughter / age 3

Cannot quite make out Thomas's occupation , even though the writing is beautiful.
It looks like "Self Actor Minder " but I am sure it isn't ! probably something like a winder in a cotton factory

The family are still at this address in 1881, and Mary Ann is stated to be a widow.

Hope this is what you were looking for

My mum was a slubber tenter which I always thought a funny named occupation!

I'm just off to read about Elizabeth Burgess now.

Hello Jan

I am currently researching Elizabeth (Lizzie) Burgess, once of the Carl Rosa Opera Company, and stumbled across your RootsChat post this evening during a Google search. I have joined RootsChat specifically to contact you. The information and photographs will be fascinating research material for a brief study I am currently carrying out, and I would therefore be very keen to correspond with you further.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Simon
