Does anyone out there know of a website that would tell about the weavers industry between 1780 -1815?

Although this link is for Airdrie Weavers' Society and relates to weaving in the Monklands, some of the information will apply to other places  http://www.airdrieparks.org.uk/documents/5_WeavingA1.pdf
Smellie from Gartshore to New Monkland;  Sneddon from Polmont to New Monkland;  Lumsden, Bo'ness to Lanarkshire;  Black, McCallum, Wotherspoon at New Monkland;  Fyfe at  Cambuslang;  Currie, Hamilton on Arran; Gilchrist, Brown, Campbell on Islay

Hello there.

You could try having a roll through these posts on RootsChat and the TalkingScot forum. The man signing himself off as "RUSSELL" on the TS forum has a small local interest group at Kilbarchan, and supports their Weavers Cottage, in his forum posts.

RC search for 'Weavers Museum' & 'Weavers Kilbarchan'.

Likewise for TalkingScot.

PS, I would also try the Paisley Museum site for info, and if you have a particular Lanarkshire Parish in mind you could have a look to see what the late 1790’s Statistical Account has to say. I’ve quickly grabbed one link from my research, but fear it is more about Glasgow dung than weaving.

The period you refer to was really the "beginning of the end" for the weavers with mechanisation leading to the use of mass often untrained labour

Have a read at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calton_weavers
http://www.gcu.ac.uk/radicalglasgow/chapters/weavers.html  (similar information)

and more general information about the period. Although English based the information is pretty universal in that similar things were happening all over Britain.

Quote
In 1777, there were 23 weavers living in Cottingham (some are listed on the 1777 militia list), but competition from large industrial mills led to the collapse of the hand loom weaving industry in the early years of the 19th century.

This caused a great deal of poverty and hardship for local people, especially in Corby where, at one time, around 89% of the working population was engaged in weaving and related activities. In Kettering, with over a third of the population on poor relief, the situation became so desperate that the town declared itself bankrupt!

By 1841, the industry had all but disappeared in the area.

Thanks to all who sent websites.  What a wonderful wealth of information!  It helps me to better understand what was going on at the time  my ancestors were there.
