Dublin Orphans in 1901
« on: Friday 20 May 05 20:30 BST (UK) »
Hi Catherine etc

I am looking for 3 sisters Florence, Beatrice and Louise Dewey who may have been in a Dublin Orphanage at the time of the 1901 census.

My father John Dewey was placed in an orphanage after his mother died late 1915.  I would like to find out any information available.

Thank you

Hiya Sorrento,

This is an interesting query. It may prove to be a difficult search..I wonder for what length of time records, about orphans placed into care in orphanages, are kept ??? Was one of the Dewey sisters the mother of your father ??? I am puzzled about this as there is a 14 year gap between the time the sisters were in the orphanage and your father entering the orphanage. I wonder if the Dewey sisters, and later your father, were placed in the care of the Sisters of the Holy Faith ??? http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07407a.htm

All the Best, Chris

I have also been doing some research on the early life of my maternal grandmother who was also an orphan. We found her in listed as a domestic servant in the 1911 Irish census. In the previous census of 1901 we found her only with her initials in what appears to be an orphanage in Dublin.

I'm certain by now you have found what you were looking for but if you haven't you will by opening the following link. :)

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Kingstown/York_Street/1318424/

There are 3 Dewey girls listed. One is Florence, (shows up 2x) Beatrice and a third by the name of Lily. I didn't see a Louise though.

Good luck on your search
