There are no service or pension records surviving for him.  Over 60% of WW1 records were destroyed in the WW2 blitz

Do you already have his medal card details?

hi
as thomas john walletts grandsoni am also looking in to his pasti contacted the cheshire museum and a very helpful guy there has put me on to chatham as this is royal engineers http://www.re-museum.co.uk/ he also was able to tell me that he thought  thomas wallett was in the army proir to the war ,left and was recalled to colours in august 1914. as he was posted on the 12/12/1914 .i have not been able to verify this yet but when i asked if he could have been in the T A he thought this unlikley hi shropshire L I number 6276being a low one  points to him being a regular about 1900 as there is no sign of him on the 1901 census.

i hope to find out more when i call the museum in the next week

The SWB list reference means his Silver War Badge* and they are now available on An/stry

Don't know if this link will work whilst you are logged on to them

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=2456&iid=wo329_2993-00240&fn=Thomas&ln=Wallett&st=r&ssrc=&pid=99409
If not, just put Wallett in the search page for Silver War Badge and you'll spot his number.
The page you see is that reference RE/1137 on the Medal Card.

He enlisted in 1900. Discharged 12/10/1917 due to illness aged 38 yrs.

You write as if he was in an unit called Shropshire Light Infantry Engineers. He went overseas initially as Shropshire LI 6276 and then transferred at some stage to the Royal Engineers when he was given the new number. The RE number seems quite low for them. Someone may want to give an opinion about roughly when it was allocated.

i thought to start with like a lot or men that he joined up about 1914 but now see i was wrong.
funny that we both checked this site so now i will need to dig deeper and see what and why joined the   shorpshire light infantry after all he had a trade as a plasterer.
