Sunderland: Elizabeth Cassidy nee Drody
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 20:09 BST (UK) »
I am researching Elizabeth Cassidy nee Cassidy.  She was born in Ireland, but I have no further details.  Looking for any information as all re place of birth in Ireland, Family, Descendants etc.  I have the following information:
Elizabeth Cassidy nee Drody (daughter of unknown) - my Great Great Grandmother.
Born 1826(circa), Ireland - details unknown. Possibly born 1829 as her burial/grave records give her age as 58yrs in 1887 (see hereunder).
Died 17 January 1887, Suffolk Street, South-Sunderland, England.
Elizabeth died from Typhus, according the her death certificate, which is a confirmed document.
I have posted re Peter Cassidy b.1824 in Ireland before but no additional information came to hand.
Any info re Elizabeth Drody would be appreciated.

Do you have the Marriage Certificate?

Do you have any Census entries for this couple?

Yes, go to: http://www.cassidyfamilyqueensland.com/PeterCassidy.html where you will find all information and documents including census record, death certificates and marrige certificate.  Please note that the marriage certificate shows him as "Patrick" but the same marriage appears in the Sunderland City Council records as "Peter Cassidy and Elizabeth Drody".  We are convinced it is one and the same person, because of aforesaid, dates etc.  Also There is no other record of an Elizabeth Drody being married around those years.

Bob,

On your website you have Elizabeth Drodys marriage cert. 25 Oct 1851. Elizabeth is of Claxheugh, Bishopwearmouth. Gives her father as John Drody, Papermaker, and a John Drody is a witness at the marriage.

In 1841 census, Ford Paper Mill, Bishopwearmouth,

John Droddie, 40, Papermg, b. Ireland (or it could be Scotland?)
Mary Droddie, 25, b. Ireland,
Margt Droddie, 20, b. Ireland,
Ann Droddie, 15, b. Ireland,
Eth Droddie, 10, b. Ireland,
HO107/310/13/19/32

In 1851 census, Claxheugh Cottages, Ford, Bishopwearmouth,

Joseph Smith, 36, Papermaker, b. Ireland,
Mary Smith, wife, 35, b. Ireland,
Elizabeth Drody, visitor, unm, 21, b. Ireland.
HO107/2395/58/4

A marriage Sunderland, Jun qtr 1848, Joseph Smith and Mary Drody (confirmed on Sunderland reg site).

Also in 1851 census, Waterside Row, Ford, Bishopwearmouth. 5 pages away from Elizabeth.

Edward Hepburn, 29, Shipwright, b. South Hylton,
Margaret Hepburn, wife, 28, b. Dublin, Ireland,
John Drodey, visitor, wid, 58, Papermaker, b. Hampshire N.K.,
HO107/2395/32/9

A marriage South Shields, Sep qtr 1846, Edward Hepburn and Margaret Drodey (confirmed on South Tyneside reg site).

A Margaret Hebbron (mark X) is the second witness on Elizabeth Drodys marriage cert on your website, so probably Margaret Hepburn, Elizabeths sister.

In 1861 census, Wheatsheaf, Ford, South Hylton,

Joseph Richardson, 37, House Carpenter, b. Sunderland,
Ann Richardson, wife, 36, b. Ireland,
+ 4 children b. South Hylton,
John Drody, father in law, 76, Papermaker, b. Ireland.
RG 9/3770/51/18

A marriage Sunderland,  Dec qtr 1848, Joseph Richardson and Ann Drody (confirmed on Sunderland reg site).

In 1891 census, Ann Richardson (nee Drody) birthplace is given as Dublin, Ireland.

A death, John Drody, Sep qtr 1862, Sunderland.

So at least two of Elizabeths sisters claim to be born in Dublin. Her father claims to be born either Ireland or Hampshire, depending on census.

Northumberland - Smith, Willis,
Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill
North Yorkshire - Layfield,
Ireland - Collins

Bob,

Also, regarding the confusion over the Peter / Patrick Cassidy marriage to Elizabeth Drody.

Peter and Patrick were often interchangeable names at the time, particularly among Irish and Scottish immigrants. See this thread.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,434201.0.html

So, given that he is a 26 year Potter from South Hylton on the marriage cert,  this will probably be Peter / Patrick a few months before the marriage.

1851 census, Blithe St, Ford, South Hylton.
Lodging with a Pallin family :
Patrick Cassady, Lodger, unm, 26, Journeyman Potter, b. Ireland,  K not.
HO107/2395/41/26

I suspect K not means "Not Known"  ie the head of the family who answered the census questions knew he was from Ireland, but didn't know which county.

Familysearch has the marriage at Sunderland St. Mary. 25 Oct 1851. Patrick Cassitty and Elizabeth Drotty. Catholic Church marriage records sometimes give additional info such as place of birth (Irish county).

Some kind person on here might look it up for you at Tyne & Wear Archives.

Alan, Thanks so much for all the work you have done - I don't think I would have uncovered so much information myself!  I will request a look up for:
