Hello,
Recently I read a post where someone had found information in the following book/microform/computer disc.

The British Army in Australia 1788-1870 : index of personnel / James Hugh Donohoe

As I am not currently in australia, I was wondering if someone would be going to a library which held this book (libraries are listed in the following link http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/15410302), and if they would be kind enough to lookup any information on James OSGOOD (serving in the 11th Regiment, I believe during the 1840s and 1850s).

Thanks for reading.
Karina

The above is an INDEX ONLY with no further identifying information on them.
It lists British soldiers and marines who served in the Australian colonies between 1788-1870 & the information is taken from the payroll records.

OSGOOD James - 1/11th North Devonshire Regiment of Foot

The 1/11th served in the colonies 1845-1856.

Here is a cut and paste from another thread that I posted on.  The links are still working:

If you are up for some military research, a lot of the regimental muster books/rolls and pay lists have been microfilmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP).  You have to consult the AJCP Handbook (Part 4 - War Office) to find the microfilm numbers for your regiment and time period.

This is the handbook  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a4k/   and these are the microfilm  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a4n/   (232 of them!)  and a bit about what they are   http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a4o/    You can always email the NLA as well and ask them to have a look at the handbook for you to find the film numbers for your regiment.

If you don't live anywhere near the NLA (like me), you can get the microfilm through inter-library loan as long as your local library has a microfilm reader.  The NLA charges about $15 as a flat fee for postage and I don't know if there is a limit, but I have ordered six at a time.  The last one that they appear on before discharge sometimes gives you their place and date of enlistment, and occupation at the time of enlistment, but won't give you any family info.

I realise that you are not in Australia so you may have to employ a researcher.  I believe this is the only way for you to find info about a soldier.  He does not appear on the Chelsea Pensioners list of retired soldiers so he probably purchased a discharge before qualifying.

I would firstly check his children's baptismal records to make sure your James was the soldier of the 11th.

One day the UK National Archives will have these records digitised and available for purchase online.  One day.  ;D

Thanks for the lookup, Merlin. I had hoped that there would be a little more  information in the index, but its good to have followed that lead until end.

And thank-you to warncoort and dundee for the suggestion of asking the library directly. I had not realised that it was possible to get information remotely like this. What a wonderful service!

Thanks Debra, for those detailed links. This is a *fantastic* lead. I will pursue this concurrent to waiting for the baptism certs to arrive, as I'm confident that there will be a match between the soldier James & my ancestor James: all his life events (marriage & birth of children) were in locations where the 11th were stationed, and Osgood is not a common name in Australia.
Thanks to all for taking the time to post.
All the best,
Karina

Hi

James Osgood served with the 11th North Devonshire Regiment which was in Australia 1845-1856. His Personnel file should still exist and would be held in the National Archives in Kew near London.  The Musters and Payrolls of this unit will be found in the Australia Joint Copying Programs Microfilm Series held in most major Australia Librairies and also at Kew. The Musters will cite his location, rank and pay in Australia at particular times
