HELP - Marshall & Martin
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 11:27 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find details of my great grandfather, and great grandmother  His name was William James Marshall, and he was born in County Down. Her name was Isabella Martin.

The information I have is as follows:
The 1901 census shows William living in the townland of Island Bane.  He is shown as 12 years old (born about 1889 in Co Down).  He is living with his parents, James Marshall (age 50) and Mary Marshall (age 35).  Both shown as being born in Co Down.

The 1901 census shows Isabella living in Ringdufferin, as a 12 year old servant of Charles & Mary Breeze. She is shown as Bella Martin, but I think that it's the same person.

I have their marriage certificate from 7th February 1908, when they married at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Killyleagh.  William is shown as living in Ballymacarron, and his father is shown as James Marshall. Mary's father is shown as Thomas Martin. She is shown as living in Clea, and still shown as a servant.

The 1911 census shows him in the townland of Ringdufferin, as a 22 year old.  (Ringdufferin is where my grandmother was born, in 1914). He is now shown with his wife, Isabella Martin, who is also shown on his marriage certificate.

I know that William Marshall died on 30th April 1943, and I have a photograph of his grave stone in Killyleagh. I have no idea where Mary died, or is buried.  I have heard that she died in 1946, quite old,
I am trying to find out more about William & Mary's birth/baptism, and also details of their parents.  I know that William's father was James Marshall, and mother was Mary, but I am trying to find out more.  I have a lead that says the mother was a Mary Gailbrath, but I am unable to confirm this.  I have tried to order a birth certificate from the HSE in Dublin, but after three weeks it still hasn't arrived!

I know nothing about any possibilities for Isabella Martin's mother.

Is anyone able to provide confirmation of birth details of  William Marshall and Mary Martin, or confirmation that William's mother was indeed Mary Gailbraith.
Any information at all around Isabella Martin's mother would also help a great deal.
I am finding it quite hard to find Irish records, unless I have very specific details.  I am a member of ancestry.co.uk, but that doesn't seem to help much.

I've read this through a few times and am still confused  :-\

William James Marshall- born c1889 Co.Down
parents- James Marshall and Mary
1901- Island Bane; 1908- Ballymacarron; 1911- Ringdufferin

married 1908 Isabella Martin born c1889
parents- Thomas Martin & ___
1901- servant, Ringdufferin (Bella Martin); 1908- servant, Clea

Now for the puzzling bits- who is this Mary?
"The 1901 census shows Mary living in Ringdufferin, as a 12 year old servant of Charles & Mary Breeze. She is shown as Bella Martin, but I think that it's the same person."

Who is this William Marshall & wife? Mary?
William James Marshall was only about 54 in 1943 so it's not him, father's name James so not him.
"I know that William Marshall died on 30th April 1943, in his 90's, and I have a photograph of his grave stone in Killyleagh. I have no idea where Mary died, or is buried.  I have heard that she dies in 1946, quite old, "
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

To save others from searching for the census records-

1901 Marshall family in Isalnd Bane- note daughter's middle name is Orr:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Killinchy/Island_Bane/1230353
1911 Marshall family in Ballymacarran- note James and Mary married 28 years  (c1883) and Thomas Orr brother-in-law to James is in household:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Killyleagh/Ballymacarran/239735/

MARRIAGE: James Marshall Jan./Mar.1883 Downpatrick registration district volume 1 page 577- Mary Galbraith on same page.
To confirm if the above couple are ones you are looking for you'd need to check birth certificate for one of the children to get mother's full name.

Sorry, I got myself confused here!  To clarify (correct) the initial information, the only Mary is the mother of William James Marshall.  She is the one who I think may be a Gailbraith.

When I said that William Marshall died in 1943, in his 90's, it was actually his father, James, who died in his 90's,but in  in 1933.

William did die in 1943, however the gravestone shows that he was only 53 years old.

Sorry for the errors, I read the submission twice, but still missed it!

I have amended the original message, so it reads true, I hope...
