Passenger List .. SV John BELL .. Hobart 1855
« on: Friday 18 May 12 08:41 BST (UK) »
Can anyone assist please?

The SV John Bell arrived at Hobart from Grennock in Scotland on 04.12.1855.  The vessel was carrying a number of immigrant passengers.  Is there a Passenger List available?

Would appreciate any assistance or advice to locate.

In anticipation thank you.

Hi Alex,

I have attached a copy of the John Bell sailing advert from the Glasgow Herald 17 Aug 1855.
In mentions that the 'Holders of Bounty Tickets issued by the Government of Van Diemens Land will get free passage'.

Perhaps you could see if there is a record of these Bounty Tickets still to be had somewhere?

Regrads,
John

Hi Alex,

Having a quick look at the manifest, it is moderately detailed -  age, marital status, education, native place, religion, occupation, and not too hard to read.

Let us know if you spot your person of interest in the index and need a lookup.

John Bell, Cando and Dundee

Thank you all, much appreciated.

I checked that Tasmanian site :-http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=91 but no success.

I am looking for a George Bryce who arrived on the John Bell on 04.12.1855 from Grennock, Scotland.  I stumbled opon this information on Ancestry and have been unable to verify hence my interest in a Passenger List.

My fellow was born in 1817 .. a small age difference ..  in Lanark (not that far from Grennock !!) he apparently never married and ended up in Palmerston, Otago,  New Zealand.  A newspaper report of the time state he was employed as a groom at time of his death in 1888.

Have never been able to establish how our George Bryce wound up in New Zealand.

Cando in all the circumstances a check of that Passenger List for George Bryce would be most useful please.

Again thanking you in anticipation.

Alex G

P.S.  On the New Zealand board I have this post:-

Hi Alex,

George BRYCE on the John Bell was aged 35, Single, Church of Scotland, could read and write, a farm labourer, his native place was Lanark, and he is listed with a number of other young (ish) men from Lanark who were brought out by a John Walker - they were farm labourers/ shepherds.  He was the only BRYCE onboard.

He does appear in the index at http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=91   8)

Debra

Yes I found George Bryce on that link thank you.  Guessed I pressed the wrong buttons !!

Will see if I can trace our George and establish whether where he stayed in Tasmania or moved on.   He isn't poles apart in terms of age or occupation of my family member in New Zealand who was a groom (horses).

The PROV Victoria and Ancestry will be a good start.  Would be absolutely marvellous if I could link him with the George Bryce in Palmerston, Otago.

Many thanks

Hello John

Try this link for Bounty Ticket Holders.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~austashs/immig/title.htm

Have to do some more checks but might appear that this George Bryce died in Australia in 1884

Cheers

Hi there. I am seeking to identify about a 14-16 year old boy, the was either working as a Cabin Boy or a passenger on the John Bell which arrived into Hobart on 4 Dec 1855 from Glasgow. His name was David Scott, born about 1839-1841, either in Scotland or England. Unsure if he traveled solo.

Can anyone look up the ships manifest of immigrants if possible? I checked the Tasmania Archives on line and no Scott family at all.

Any assistance, greatly appreciated.

Jim
