Portadown. Armagh
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 04:27 BST (UK) »
Hello.
I have been researching my Family Tree. Mostly in England and Wales. But yesterday I discovered that part of the Family were from Ireland. I have a Thomas George Best born 1919 in Portadown. Armagh. and a William John Best also born in Portadown in 1927 also in Armagh. They are Step brother's. As their father Samuel George Best had 2 marriages. Which his first Marriage is most likely to be in Armagh???
Both Brother's passed away in England. and I initially thought they were from Scotland but now have Proof that it was Ireland.
On one of the Son's marriage certificate it says that Samuel was a Grocery assistant. But I have no idea if it was in England or Ireland.
Could any-one please tell me where I could get information of a Birth etc in Armagh. My biggest challenge is I am in NZ. so it is impossible for me to visit Ireland. Any help would be really appreciated. Pam Jones

Marriage: Samuel George Best Apr./June 1917 Lurgan Registration District volume 1 page 841. From free search on an online district bride's name was Lily and checking the civil registration district bride's name was Lily McFall.

See here for details on Irish marriage certificates and how to order them using the above details.

There is a Samuel George Best in 1911 Irish census who is just about old enough to be the groom (marriage certificate will confirm father's name and occupation)-

Same family in 1901-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
Samuel and Lily married in Drumcree Church of Ireland, Lurgan District on 10 Apr 1917
Should the census record be the correct family then George Best married Jane Sloan on 6 Jul 1895 in Portadown Methodist Church.

Thank you Both So Much.
With having both Death Certificates it confirmed where they were born. Pam

Hi,
This may be something more but will need to be confirmed. On 15 Aug 1868 William Sloan married Jane McCready in Knocknamuckly Church of Ireland, Lurgan District. I can find two children of this marriage, Joshua Sloan on 25 Dec 1869 and Jane Sloan on 4 Apr 1872.
