I am descended from the Clarkes of Mullaghcarton and can confirm that the marriage on this thread for James Clarke at Glenavy is not for the James mentioned on the Griffiths Valuation at Mullaghcarton. James Clarke from Mullaghcarton died in 1867 and left a very interesting will which can be read on the PRONI site. His wife was Margaret and their children were James, John, Anne, Elizabeth, Robert, Samuel and Henry.

I have found marriages for James and Anne (and Henry died aged 16) but I have not yet traced marriages for the other siblings. Could the Frederick Robert Clarke mentioned here be the Robert mentioned in the will?

Hi, i did read this will last year and i did wonder if he could be Robert as he did serve an apprenticeship as a marine engineer . I know Frederick  Robert Clarke did call at least one of his sons by his third not his first name , so it could be a common thing and he could be Robert .Its good to know you thought the same thing so i can do some searching down that line. Much appreciated.

Hi again Sara,

Did the marriage certificate you obtained definately confirm the townland as Mullaghcarton? Other documents for this family confirm them as living in Mullaghcarton as they lived on the Mullaghcarton Road, but strictly speaking in the townland of Magheraliskmisk, which is why they are located there on the 1901 and 1911 census.

The other slight concern I have about our theory is your Robert's date of birth. As far as I can tell the James Clarke who died in 1867 and whose will you have seen was married in the 1830s, with his first son James born around 1839. I think James' wife Margaret was born about 1807 which would mean if Robert was born in 1852 then she would have been 45 and the brother Samuel seemed to be a couple of years younger again.

Ages weren't always accurate in those days, have you any documentation to confirm Frederick Robert Clarke's actual date of birth? This would be a great help I would think towards verifying that Frederick Robert is indeed Robert.

Hi , I hope you remember me asking you about the Clarke of Mullaghcarton a few years ago and i was wondering if you could give me the exact location of where the farm was and any churches where they were buried and is the quarry lane mentioned in the will where it says the little house was the quarry on the mullaghcarton rd . I still only have a certificate saying frederick robert father was james clarke but i did find maybe a connection  as although he lived in Southampton he died on the same street in Liverpool where Ann Clarkes daughter lived , so was he visiting her ? I am going over to Belfast next weekend so it would be good to know of churches or places i could visit or get clues from and also have you done your DNA , if you are related to them would it match if i was ? Many Thanks Sara .x

Sara, Frederick Robert Clarke is my great-great-grandfather on my father's side. I've been trying to decode the place name on the census for ages! Mullaghcarton would make sense as the box isn't big enough to squeeze all that in.
Did you find out any more information about Frederick, when he might have left Ireland and who his parents were? I notice his wife's mother was Irish so I wonder if he stayed with her when he first came over and then took a shine to her daughter?!

Feel free to contact me as we are distantly related :) Or maybe not so distant.
