Chelsea
« on: Wednesday 16 May 12 11:47 BST (UK) »
Richard Dobinson b. 1741, m. (1) Abigail 1762 (2) Sarah 1776. Possibly had military background. Two children b. 1773 & 1775 at Pensioners Army Hospital, Chelsea.  Would he have been employed there in some capacity? Both wives died at Chelsea as did Richard. Sarah was Usher of the Hall at the Royal Hospital before she died.  Would they all have been buried in the Hospital Cemetery and if so is there any way to access that information, short of a visit, and it's a long way from Australia.  Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Aunty,
The burial records for the Royal Hospital are supposed to be on Ancestry. But only from 1812 .Don't see any entries for Richard,Sarah ,Abigail.
There is a marriage allegation on there for his second marraige and you might want to check out Chelsea pensioners at the National Archives.

Ps there is an entry for an insurance policy for a Richard Dobinson coffeeman at Kensington 1779 on london lives website.

Dear Aunty,
Just had another look on there and Sarah's Will is on Ancestry 16.2.1815 as a widow so Richard must have died before that. She leaves everything to her daughter in law Sarah Maria Sutter of NSW.It's well worth having a look ,if you haven't already.

Thanks ciderdrinker, Already have Sarah's Will, and only today found the Allegation of Richard and Sarah.  I believe findmypast has a death date of 1891 and a Will for Richard, but as I don't subscribe to it I can't access the information.
Will check the nationalarchives site.

Hi

Information from the burial guide at the top of Rootschat London and Middlesex boards

Bishop Transcripts for Royal Chelsea Burial Ground (Anglican burials only) 1813--1854 held at the London Metropolitan Archives and therefore on Ancestry.

The Royal Hospital Chelsea has an archive of records of In-Pensioners from 1871 to the present date. Prior to 1871 all records are held at the National Archive, Kew. The burial records are held at The National Archives in series RG4

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=chelsea+hospital+burial&txtfirstdate=&txtlastdate=&txtrestriction=&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=43&image1.y=11

Those registers are online at BMD Registers and The Genealogist (both websites are owned by the same company)

http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/

Richard Dobinson's administration, he didn't leave a will, was proved in the Consistory Court of London (the same as Sarah's will) 31st October 1791 by Sarah. Richard died in July in Chelsea.  Ancestry holds copies of the wills and administrations proved in the Consistory Court as they are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.

The fact that Richard's burial like Sarah's does not appear on the BMD registers index suggests either he has been missed off the index or mistranscribed (as happened for his administration on Ancestry - Dolinson in that case).

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda,
Thanks for that information.  Have found the administration of Richard Dobinson (Dolinson). A lesson learnt - always try alternative spelling.
