Name of ship for my Grandfather

Would it be possible for anyone to determine the name of the ship of this crew photograph? Any help would be greatly appreciated?

hi,,when and where was Thomas born? it may help to narrow down the time frame for the period of the photo.

Thomas was born in Duntocher, Clydebank Scotland 1896 and died in 1929 - I can't determine if he served in 1st World War although he did work in Clyde Shipyards so don't know if this may have allowed him to be avoided being called up??

Is there any way of telling if this is Royal or Merchant navy from the pic?

Hi, definitely Royal Navy. I can see HMS on the hat bands but I can't make out the ships name.

There is no Thomas Goggins on the naval medal roll for WW1, however, there is a Thomas Goggin, but he was born in Salford. I have also checked the Naval Service Records available online from the National Archives, and again no Goggins.

Your best bet is to get out a magnifying glass to see if you can establish the name of the ship.

You could try scanning the clearest hat band at 1200dpi and we will see if we can decipher the ships name.
