Barjen is the name I got from the Cozens family website when I was looking for confirmation of the spelling of his name.

Yes that is the family on the 1861 census.......spelt Barjew.
The enumerator on the 1871 has neatly written it as Barjeu on the image though.

I did look on the Litton Cheney,Dorset OPC site..........they are so good and helpful these OPC's.
I would love to volunteer for a village OPC but having just volunteered for the FreeCen project I wonder if it would be too much.Do you have to live in the village/area I wonder to volunteer?
I suppose you could do 1 locally and 1 in an area you were visiting for your research.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
A Google of the name didn't help.............looks as though it could be French! Depending on the spelling I suppose.

FreeBMD
From FreeBMD, Barjew jnr is listed as Berjen at his birth in 1841 (Weymouth), but as Barjew at his marriage in 1873 (Weymouth) - presumably (given the 1881 census names) to Caroline RYALL.

From FreeBMD, Barjew snr is listed as Barjeu at his death in 1893 (Dorchester).

From FreeBMD, there is the death presumably of Barjew jnr spelled thus -  age 6_ in 1901 (Weymouth).

1881 Census
From FamilySearch, Barjew snr is listed as Barjew COUSINS in the 1881 census.

Barjew jnr is listed as Barjew COZENS.

There's another Barjew in the 1881 census - a Barjew BARTLETT aged 60 and born Dorset.

IGI
A search in the IGI for Barjew as a first name in the British Isles brings up only one entry - a Barjew PITCHER marrying in London in 1785.

A search in the IGI for BARJEW as a last name in the British Isles is interesting.  It brings up quite a few under many variant spellings including BARJEW and BERJEW (there are several in French Huguenot churches - though mostly as BARGEAU, BARJEAU).  The name spelled as BARJEW goes back quite a while - there's an Elizabeth BARJEW christened 1671 in Mere, Wiltshire.

Hi JAP
I am really awestruck at the information you have given me on Barjeu/ew etc.

I am always fascinated at where the additional information that RootsChatters provide, comes from.

Thanks for your help.......I'm going to pin the information on the name to his birth certificate before I file it............and then to the tree programme I have.

Hi happy granny,

I'm just cross that I couldn't find anything about Henry PALMER alias JANUARY (that's how I see it - but who knows!).

JANUARY is a perfectly ordinary surname - ditto JAUNCEY which has been suggested.

Perhaps Henry was born with one or other surname, then his Mum married a gent with the other surname, so Henry was sometimes known as PALMER and sometimes as JANUARY (or whatever).

Good Luck,

JAP

Hi

Am currently researching the Berjew surname  thru the marriage of Robert Cozens and Joane Berjew.
Father of Joane was Richard Berjew

they married 8th Oct 1632 though

Hi Sharon K

I wonder if that's where the Barjew/Barjeu/Berjew name came into the Cozens Family...........and was then passed down the family as a Christian name. What do you think?

What Cozens have you got in the 1800's in your tree?

Hi Sue
You could well be right about the origin of Barjew as a first name. I have a similar occurence in my family: James Allsop married Susanna Wandell in 1648, there son Wandell Allsop was born in 1665 and thereafter it was a very popular first name amongst Wirksworth Allsops for 200 years. They have caused me much confusion ;D
Cheers Jan ;)

The alias looks like JAUNCEY to me. A not uncommon name.

Strangely enough someone else asked about a similar looking name some time back.

Regards
Robert
