Hiya,

I'm not sure what time frame this is, but there is a Barjew Cozens on the 1861 census born 1814 Portisham Dorset. Any connection?

I also read it as Barjew Cozens.  The alias PROBABLY means Henry changed his name more or less officially from Jan-scribble to Palmer.  Perhaps because it was a foreign name, or possibly because a relative named Palmer made him their heir.  I have one case of a distant rellie adopting his godfather's surname for that reason.

I've looked at the image for the Barjew Bob found in Litton Cheney: it definitely is Barjew - neatly written for once. The  Portesham one isn't coming up at all so goodness knows what he's been transcribed as. I first read the alias as Samway but not so sure now :-\

Barjew is a great name!!

It helps trace the family when you have a really different name like that.   :) (Assuming its right)

The alias looks to me like Jauncey. Which is in fact not an uncommon name.
