BUTTON brothers
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 09:30 BST (UK) »
There were two, probably  three BUTTON brothers who went to Australia. All born in Brighton: Albert (born 1855), Arthur (born 1858), William Henry (born 1863).
(1) Albert vanishes from England after the 1871 census. Possible that he ended up in Perth (electoral rolls 1903, 1906, death 1938). Seems from WA BMD indexes that he married Robina Lyall and had 5 children between 1897 and 1905 - but I have found no other information about Robina or any of the children beyond their birth records.
(2) Arthur emigrated to Queensland 1883 on the Duke of Devonshire with his wife Caroline Bodley Button (nee Steggall), divorced 1903 and immediately vanished. Caroline remarried in 1920 (William Taylor, in Sydney) and died in 1927. Her two children Agnes and Arthur were still living as they paid for her headstone in Rookwood Cemetery, but no further information about them or their father.
(3) William Henry Button went to Australia in the 1890s but returned to England before the 1901 census. His wife Harriet probably went with him but appears not to have returned. Did she die in Australia? The only passenger list entry that I have found lists William Button age 28 on the Australasian in 1891 with "Ethel" age 26 listed as his wife. Was "Ethel" actually Harriet? How do I find what, if anything, happened to Harriet in Australia. Is there any arrivals list to show William and Harriet (or Ethel) landing in Australia? Any return passenger lists - Australia to England?

Any pointers, or snippets of information very welcome!
-Stephen

Raylen, Essie, Wivenhoe - very many thanks indeed for this help and information. It never ceases to amaze me how knowledgeable and helpful people on rootschat can be.

In particular Harriet's death was a total mystery, though I still don't understand how or when she travelled to Australia, as the only William Button in the passenger lists I've seen was travelling with an Ethel. not a Harriet!  He was a naughty boy though. When he got back to England he lived with a married woman Frances Wilson (nee Norris) in Kent, listing her as his wife in the 1901 census, before marrying Harriet's sister Miriam (unlawfully) in Brighton Sussex, later in 1901 - and then going on to have at least two children with Frances in Kent. Sometime before 1904 Miriam also died (presumably), as he then married another different woman, in Brighton.
