FAIRVIEW, near Airdrie?
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 02:39 BST (UK) »
An ancestor's birth at Fairview was registered in 1863 in the "Landward of New Monkland in the County of Lanark".

As I am unable to locate Fairview on a copy of an Ordnance map which was revised about 1895, I am wondering if someone is able to tell me where to find this place. I suspect that it was in the vicinity of Clarkston and Drumgalloch.

Also would "Landward" be another name for Parish, perhaps?

I look forward to your comments.

I would have thought that "Landward" meant inland?

Therefore, to the east or north of New Monkland?

Incidentally, there is a Fairview Bed & Breakfast, north of Airdrie, on the A73 Stirling Road.
Maybe a clue there?

If there is a town within a parish, the parish was sometimes divided up for administrative purposes by separating the parts of the parish which were in the town from the rural areas not covered by streets. The rural areas were then termed 'landward'.

In the case of New Monkland, the town of Airdrie was separated from the rest of the parish, not only in the census but also at times for purposes of registration of births, marriages and deaths. This is why the number of the registration district is sometimes 651 (the whole parish including the town), and sometimes 651.1 for the town and 651.2 for New Monkland landward.

So no, landward is not another name for parish, and it has nothing to do with being inland as opposed to being on the coast. New Monkland is nowhere near the coast in any case.

I had a look at the six-inch Ordnance Survey map dated 1864 on the National Library of Scotland web site http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch/view/?sid=74427697.
I couldn't find a Fairview but there is a Viewfair just west-north-west of Clarkston and north-east of Drumgelloch. It is also on the 25-inch map dated 1859 http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74955742 and on the same one dated 1898 http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch-2nd-and-later/view/?jp2=82892004

Have you found the family on the 1861 and/or 1871 census at Fairview or Viewfair? What are the neighbouring addresses?

If this is your Fairview, it isn't the B and B on the A73. Fairview is quite a popular name for a house and I wouldn't bet on there being any connection.

Only making suggestions!! ;D ::)

Coming, as I do, from the West of England, where the term seaward is often used, as well as leeward and westward, I just thought it was an intelligent guess?
But obviously not!! :-[
Therefore apologies! :-X

Highlighted in blue are addresses actually named on the 1859 25-inch map, and purple indicates that there is a feature on the map which could be this place, all very close to Viewfair.

It looks as if it was a very small ED indeed, which I think increases the likelihood that Viewfair and Fairview are one and the same.

I'd say it was a very intelligent guess, even if it isn't right. No need for apologies.
