Stretton on Dunsmore - The Camp

Is there anyone out there who has pictures of the Nissen huts on this site that they would be willing to share? The Camp was the first address that I had as a new born in 1947. My mother and father lived in one of the huts. I would love to have a photograph.

Dear Mrs Stalbridge,

My name is Roger Clemons and I am Treasurer of the Stretton-on-Dunsmore History Society, and I am also looking for a photograph of the Stretton Camp. I have been in contact with one of the families who lived there, Mr David Walden and his Mother, and they have been extremely helpful with many of the names of other people who lived there. If I get hold of a photo, I will forward it onto you, and I would love to hear from you about what you can remember. I do have an aerial photo of the camp that I could forward, which was taken in 1946, but it is a bit fuzzy.

Dear Roger

I have no personal memories of the camp as I was a baby at the time. What I know is due to Mum and Dad. It seems so strange that there is no "official" photo of the site as it was used for so long to house people. My father seems to think that the huts were first aquired for domestic occupation by "squatters" rites. I do not know how true this is but I suppose it could be as it was around the end of WW2. As far as I know, they became the responsibility of Rugby Council who saw to the erection of an interior brick wall in each hut to separate bedroom space. My mother had a stove of some kind with oven and fire for cooking and  heating. A separate hut was available for doing laundry. That's all I have written down but am visiting my parents this weekend so I will probe a little more and see if I can add anything. I am sure they will be able to remember some names (does Warren ring a bell?). I will send a personal message and then we may be able to exchange e-mail addresses.

Dear Eileen,

Thank you for your prompt reply, and it is so good to be in contact with someone else who remembers the Stretton Camp. You are quite right about initially being occupied by 'squatters', as there were so many homeless people, and when the Italian PoW's were sent home, the huts didn't stay empty for long. Rugby Council did indeed take over responsibility, but as yet we have no dates, and I will be writing to the Council to see what information they have, and it is possible that they may have some photos (fingers crossed). You mentioned the name 'Warren', which is not on my list, but then there are several names still missing. I also do not have the surname 'Stalbridge' on my list, so perhaps this is your 'Married' name?

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Have you looked on the Windows on Warwickshire site. They have a wealth of old photographs from around the Warwickshire area.

I can't promise that what you are looking for will be there, but it's worth a try.

Good Morning Graham,

Many thanks for your suggestion, and for taking the time to make it. I have looked at this collection before, but had to look again just in case there were any new additions, but alas no. I am thinking of getting in touch with the Rugby Advertiser and Coventry Evening Telegraph, to see if they have anything in their archives, as you never know, but I would welcome any other suggestions.
