Why would an OPR birth record have been crossed out?

Can anyone explain what might have happened below?

OPR birth records for Kelso in 1769.  First entry is commenced and then crossed out.

"John Lamb and Isabel Allon his spouse had"

Next entry is written in full but has a large cross over this entry and the one above.

"Tho's Lamb and Isabel Allon his spouse had a son born on 17th & baptised on the 27th of April by the name of Alexander Witnesses John Atchison & James Cranston"

Next entry is similar but has different details.

"Thomas Lamb & Isabell Allan his spouse had a son named John born on the 17th & baptised the 23rd day of April 1769 Witnesses John Atchison & James Cranston"

Seems fathers name in the first entry is incorrect and the entry is started again.  Second entry is crossed out with third entry amending the sons name and the baptism date, and is written in a different hand to the first two entries.

So, any ideas on these vagaries of record keeping?  Problem for me is that the son Alexander in the second entry is the one I'm looking for and is listed in other record sources quoting this OPR.  Can this entry be believed or trusted??  I have found family tree entries quoting the third entry son John along with other children so seems valid.  Thanks.

I would think that the third one was the 'correct' one and the minister or clerk had perhaps been at the sherry having made two sets of mistakes!

Maybe there were various Lambs having children around that time and the record keeper just got mixed up.  Alexander could perhaps have been an older child to the same parents?

On the back of my birth certificate, where a note is written confirming my baptism, the priest started writing my father's name then scored it out and wrote mine.  On my great aunt's birth certificate (albeit in the 1900s), the Registrar has made "clerical errors" in half of the columns!  he must have wished he could have scored it out and started again!
