Magee Island, co Antrim
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 02:48 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
My GGGrandfather Thomas Boyland migrated to Australia sometime in the 1840-1850's.  On his papers he names his parents as John Boyland and Charlotte (nee Quigley) of Moss, Magee, co. Antrim.  He was born c 1814. Had a brother John and 2 sisters Elizabeth & Sarah.  All migrated to Australia.  Thomas sailed with a cousin Sampson Courtney Boyland whose parents were John Boyland and Jane.  Sampson is only recorded as have come from co. Antrim.

To date I have been unable to trace his line or the location "Moss".  Wondering if it could have been the name of a farm in those times.

Can anyone enlighten me further?

Cheers
Cathy,Australia.

Cathy,
         I wonder if your address might be a mis-spelling of the townland (a small administrative area) of MOSTRAGEE, in the parish of Derrykeighan, District of Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. I noted that in 1861 two of the households in this townland were headed by Elizabeth BOYLAN and Eleanor BOYLAN. In the 1901 census there is a Sampson Boyland in the townland of Ballynafeigh which is close to Mostragee. See http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Dervock/Ballynafeigh/945432/

Lennon Wylie site might help you.
Try this;
www.lennonwylie.co.uk/PT19181.htm
Also
www.archive.org/stream/.../recordsofgeneral03pres_djvu.txt (church records for Islandmagee.

It is known as Islandmagee County Antrim, you could also search under that, many birth/death records on line.

The townland of Mostragee is certainly a strong possibility.
