I will pass on your message about this man to the owner of the photo who is descended down this side of the family - she may know - though to be fair, it was a Milligan daughter who married into the Gaunt family  so  . . .  I don't know how far she's gone back with this family - or sideways either.  we shall see.

Hi Suzanne,
I don't think it is the same Milligan, the photo is of Alexander Murray Milligan - but he did have brothers, one was quite well known as a botanist and for (if my memory serves me correctly) managing convicts on an island and collecting aboriginal artefacts - some of which are still in a Tasmanian museum.  I'll have a bit of a look and see if your Milligan is a son of one of my Milligan's brothers.

Just looked at the two pictures and noticed the mention of the monacle in the lower photo. if you look very cloely at the upper photo he appears to have the same chord around his neck (his rhs) crossing his shirt, they certainly look very much like the same person

I think that is why Heather Lynne made mention of the monocle in the second photo!     It is very clear in the first isn't it? I am still having difficulty seeing it in the second to be honest!

i can't see the monacle itself, just the chord and you have to look closely to see it, the monacle could be tucked in the waistcoat. great photos too

To answer the question in your OP Wiggy, I think they are freckles - some may be skin cancers.
And I think because of that, that it's the same person (apart from his prominent cheekbones etc).
The second photo is further away, but you can see a freckle (or skin cancer!) on top of his head, plus the grouping under his right eye shows as two dots on the second photo.
