Dating please - Again!! - And anything else about these two gents

Hello again.

We think these two could be the same man - but . . . . .    Are they freckles on his face - or dirty marks - what do you think - not a silly question - there is another gent who has similar marks - but I don't think he is the same man, myself!

Well this one says the name of the man - is he the same as the previous post?   

A M Milligan's son in law was living in Victoria and he lived in Tasmania.  Hence the thought that he may have had his photo taken in both places.

 - if you'd like to dry clean his clothes a bit, that's fine by us, - but only simple clean up please - nothing fancy!      (just realised they aren't really restoration quality scans - so forget that bit!!      )

I think they could be the same man, both have deep set eyes, prominent cheekbones, similar noses and mouths.  What's in the lower man's right hand?  I wondered if it could be the monocle or magnifying glass that's visible in the first photo.

That is very observant of you, Heather.  I hadn't noticed anything in his other hand - only the papers!!

I'm sure it's the same man.  It might even be the same coat.

could be (the same coat I mean)! . .  we'll wait and see how many years between the photos!   

If it is the same man, the window is only about 6 years - Lindt setting up in Melbourne, to A.M.'s death.

Does that seem about right?

I think also the same man but the 2nd. photo looks late 1870's rather than 1883 both the cardstock & clothing suggests this.
The 1st. could be 1880's or 90's as this style was popular in both decades.Not the same coat by the way,the 2nd. is a frockcoat c.1860's-70's style & the 1st. is a shorter closer fitting style of frockcoat c.1880's-90's.

Jim, Thank you for your observations - really appreciate the input and knowledge

Trouble is  - the man in the second picture died in 1883. (if he's labelled correctly and we have to assume so, being the only one with a label)

  So the photo may not have been taken then, just labelled, noting the man and the fact that he died in 1883 - therefore,  if the first photo is earlier . . . . . that means the second must have been taken early '80s  - will that stack up??

And if it won't something is wrong - either they've miss-labelled the photo - or they are different people . . . .    which none of you think

I think they are the same bloke - when I superimposed them they were a perfect match given the disparity in the picture sizes which I could not get exactly the same but you can see here
