Marriage look up Maria Pryor, Shaftesbury Dorset
« on: Tuesday 08 May 12 20:31 BST (UK) »
Hi ,

I'm looking for a marriage record for Maria Pryor to John Smith.

All I know is that Maria Pryor was bapt. 13 Jun 1787, Shaftesbury , Dorset, and according to information I've been given, Maria's mother was Martha Follet (no idea if Martha was a widow, or unmarried mother)

If the information given to me is correct then Maria Pryor is my g.g.g. grandmother

I have no idea of the year they may have married but assuming she could have married from the age of 16 it could have been 1803 onwards. My gt.gt. grandfather Anthony John Smith was born abt. 1825 Woolwich, Kent, and Maria's daughter Emily was born 1832  Brompton, Middx so it appears the family moved about a bit.

Thanks Reeveh

If you google "OPC Dorset Shaftsbury" several of the Registers are on line

You may be lucky :)

Hi,

I checked out OPC for Shaftesbury, Dorset  ...St Peters/St James and Holy Trinity but could not find any other Pryor other than the Maria Pryor I previously mentioned. I did find a second baptism record on Ancestry and found that this child was illegitimate.

Taking those 2 facts into account I think that Martha Pryor originated from another parish as I could find no other Pryor (Pryer/Prior ) within a reasonable time scale, so she could have been in Shaftesbury parish to have her baby or possibly been working there....if anyone has any ideas I would be glad of some help on this one.

Thank you

reeveh :)

Family search has mother Martha Pryor.

Unsubstantiated but there is a William Pryor/Martha Folliot marriage 22 Apr 1776 Monkon Deverill Wiltshire.  There's a Martha born said place 14 Oct 1756 parents Hennery/Mary.

The actual baptism record for Maria says daughter of Martha Pryor then it says something in brackets - looks like "Caplion"  :-\

Maybe someone else can read it - could be a clue*  Not your original query I know but no joy with that yet.

*The same word appears in brackets after some other mothers on the page.  Cap something.  Must have a meaning but I don't know what.

Hi,

Thanks for info, I too found the William Pryor/Martha Folliot marriage but ruled it out when one of the parish records on Ancestry showed Maria Pryor as being illegitimate, could it be possible Martha Pryor was a widow and gave birth to an illegitimite child?, that's something I hadn't thought of until now, but there is a gap of 31 years between Maria being born and Martha Folliot marrying William Pryor.

The word "caplion" you see after the mother's name has been transcribed as  "baseborn"....as far as I'm aware that means first child.

According to the 1841 census Maria Smith (formerly Pryor) is living with her son Anthony John Smith, b. 1825 Woolwich and daughter Emily b.1832 Brompton, goodness knows where Maria Pryor and John Smith married, the dreaded Smith name again; Maria cetainly moved around a lot as she ended up living in Australia with the daughter Emily, someone in Australia has links to the family, but we are stuck on Martha for sure.

Thansk for taking the time to reply , much appreciated :)
