News paper or coroners reports
« on: Tuesday 08 May 12 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hello
Im hoping some one can help, I have a copy of my 2x Grt Grandfather on it it says that he died from probable apoplexy  and that there ws a inquest held on the 10th Aug 1883  and the death cert was signed by the coroner  John Molesworthy Coroner for Lancashire.  would there be any mention of this in the local news paper  he lived in Royton at Ege Lane and was a stoker.
If anyone thinks it my have a mention in a paper  would you be so kind to have a look for me
Thankyou
Jackey

Jackey - if you want to give me the name (PM me if you prefer) I'll have a look in the Guardian archives (it was the Manchester Guardian) in those days - I don't expect it would be there, but no harm looking.

Sorry, but as I thought - no result using Riddle for dates 9-16 August 1883 - have you tried the British Newspaper Archive - it's being added to all the time & can be searched free, but you need credits to see the full texts (there's an offer of free credits on first registration at the moment):

Thanks  will give it a go  :) Do you think its poosible that the records office would hold any coroners reports from that time. The reason I ask this  is that I volunteer at our local Whitehaven office and  have just finised adding coroners reports  to a data base.

Jackey - I think the general experience of RootsChatters (and mine) is that most coroner's records weren't kept, in the past. Having said that.....

It would depend on where the coroner was based, but if he died at Royton I suspect it would be Oldham & looking at the webpage for their archives they have some Coroners records so worth a try!

Good luck!
