Hi,

If you have a sub to A$y you will be able to follow Robert Hugh Harris from the NZ 1853-1981 Electoral Rolls.   He is first showing on the 1914 E/R for the Bay of Islands.

Lillian died in 1969 and Herbert in 1947.   Both are buried in Rawene Cemetery.

Can one do a free search for New Zealand attestation papers for WWI soldiers?

The only thing I can see for him is in the link below.    You would need to start a new thread asking one of the Wellington Chatters to see if they can look it up.   Maybe with "Wellington Archives" as the title so it is easily spotted by them.  You would need to put this link up, so they can order it.
