Argentina Irish Reilly Family City of Dresden
« on: Monday 07 May 12 20:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down my ancestors, the REILLY family who emigrated to Argentina from Ireland in 1889. They travelled on the famous City of Dresden landing in Beunos Aires on Feb 15th 1989 according to the ships records they were

Phillipp (Philip 34) - my great grandfather
Eliza (32) my great grandmother
John
Philipp (Philip 16)
John (14)
Eliza (7)
Annie (6)
Alice (4)
Martin (2) - my grandfather

I can find the Reillys with the exception of the young Philip  back in Ireland in the 1901 census

In addition the census states that  three more Reilly children were born in Beunos Aires
Mary (11) so born Sth America ~ 1890
William (9) so born Sth America ~ 1892
Joseph (6) so born Sth America ~ 1895

My father says that his father Martin spoke of working on large sheep ranches with the Grouchos. I would like to track down the following:
1. where they lived in Argentina
2. when / where Mary, William and Joseph were born
3. When and how they return to Ireland
4. Did Phillip / Philip junior return to Ireland

I would be grateful for any suggestions - is there a census that I can check?
Given the publicity that surrounded the Dresden Affair I am curious to know if their are any records of my family after they arrived in Argentina

any help would be much appreciated.

thank you

Hi Sabinab,

I see that you have posted a couple of months ago but I have just come accross it now.

My g.grandparants Robert & Margaret Whitmore travelled on the City of Dresden in 1889 to Argentina.

I have found some info on the Family Search site including the birth of a child.  There is also a census on for 1895 on this site.

My family returned to Dublin via Southhampton in 1891 which I found on Ancestry.

The only other site I have got info from is http://www.irlandeses.org/dresden.htm    There is also a passenger list at  http://www.irlandeses.org/passenger.htm

I hope this is of some help.

Hi,
I'm Carla, from Argentina. Have u tried searching on the Argentinian National census of 1895??
Site:

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1410078

Is there a posibility that their names had been written in their spanish form in the census? I mean: Mary= Maria, William= Guillermo, Joseph= Jose??

Hi Carla

Thank you for this I didn't know that there was a census in Argentina an 1895.

The City of Dresden Records show that my relatives left Ireland in 1889 and
The Irish Census of 1901 shows that all but one of them were back in Ireland by 1901
The 1901 Irish Census also states that 3 children were born in Sth America http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000955906/
However the 1911 Irish Census more specifically sates that theses 3 children were born in Beunos Aires - there seems to be something more specific written above one of the entries I wonder whether it might mean anything to you - it could just be 'somewhere' but it also could be a more specific location - any ideas http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002674257/

Did the Argentina Census of 1895 record everyone living there at the time - are the records incomplete? It would seem from what I have found thus far that my relatives were definitely still living in Argentina in 1895 but I can't seem to track them down on the 1895 census

I have found one possible entry fro Mary Reilly born 1890 - Maria E Reilly but it seems unlikely since there are no other possible family members on the same page
It would help to know how the Census records work - is there somewhere that I can read about it?

thanks again

Sabina

Hi ronoc

thank you its amazing to think that our great grandparents made the same journey together. I think that my family stayed in Argentina for approx 12 years but I can't find any records of them there between 1889 and 1901. I have no idea how they returned to Ireland but I wonder did they take the same route as your g.grandparents via southhampton. I shall try to track this down. Weren't they such brave people. did your family resettle in Ireland?
