That's them Louthlass! I remember the names from a cursory glance at the censuses.

That's just brilliant - thank you so very much!

1884 marriage in the Gainsborough RD gives the names as Edward Exton & Harriet CARKWINN but it's the only bmd record on freebmd for the surname.

According to "Surnames of England and Wales" there were under 5 instances of this surname shown in the 2002 census. More probably I think it does not exist, either in 2002 or in the 19th century. In my opinion it's a transcription error at least twice. Best turn to the original document if possible.

Thanks for taking the time to look, Glen  :)

Roger - based on those figures I'd be inclined to agree with you that it's a transcription error.  The original documents would be the safest bet.  Thank you once again  ;D

Thanks so much for that - have only just started the research on this family and got very waylaid by a mystery involving her brother, so my cursory searches hadn't yet extended to name variations on spellings!

I'm very grateful for the help everyone has given  :-*

The bmd events in Lincolnshire reg districts are handy as you can get certificates which are scans of the original registers (thus avoiding some of the transcription errors associated with GRO created certs).

Orders can be made to the Lincs County Council by phone or online (see the council website), from my own experience they are also quicker than the GRO too.

Thank you Glen - that sounds like a good tip, especially for the little mystery I'm working on at present!
