Thanks so much for your offer of help, Louthlass. After a few years of FH research on my own family, am just beginning my husband's side, so am not as au fait with the areas etc!
The family names are Jefferys and Exton. 1911 census details are:
Address: Saundby, Gainsborough, Lincs.
Ernest Jefferys 26 Cowman on Farm b. Rowston, Lincs (abt 1885)
Sarah Jane Jefferys 24 (married 4yrs, 2 children born, still living) b. Beckingham, Notts (b. 1886)
Charles Frederick Jefferys 4 b. Gainsborough (b. 21 Jan 1907)
George Ernest Jefferys 1 b. Gainsborough (b. 1910)
Charles Frederick was my husband's grandfather. His daughter confirms that Ernest's wife was Sarah Jane Exton. She was told that Ernest was not the real father of Charles Frederick. I found the marriage for Ernest & Sarah Jane: Jan-Mar 1907 Gainsborough 7a P1183. Charles was born 21 Jan 1907; the marriage may have taken place just before the birth. Am waiting for a copy of Charles's birth certificate from a family member in case it names a different father, but accept it may name Ernest as the father.
There were 4 further children:
James Edward Jan-Mar 1917 Gainsborough
Margaret E Jul-Sep 1922 Gainsborough
Albert Apr-Jun 1924 Southwell, Notts
and Elsie May. Cannot find a birth for her - know that she married a George Calcroft - found a death index entry for Elsie May Calcroft in Dec 1997 Cheshire
that gives her birth date as 21 Dec 1920, but it is not proven to be her. My husband remembers she died just before Charles Frederick (who died in 1998) so I think it is highly probable, and if so, would give her birth year as 1920).
Charles Frederick's daughter thinks that Ernest and Sarah Jane moved from Gainsborough sometime after his birth, to Nottingham, and Retford. They also lived in Walesby, then Ollerton, but I don't have any idea of which years.
Hope this all makes a bit of sense, and if you are able to provide any further information from the records you have access to, I would be so grateful!
Thank you

Mrs. T.
