I recently found a connection with a Sutherland family, not sure if it is the same as yours..

Parents from Scotland, settled in Otago, some children ended up in Auckland

Wallace is in Purewa cemetery, Auckland. http://www.purewa.co.nz/details.asp?id=119978&type=Cremation

Alot of Sutherlands buried there.

Perhaps you can find his death notice/obituary in a local paper - which may state his family/wife.

Yes,  ... and he married in England. 
[Missing from NZ e/rolls after 1935 - and turns up in Auckland again in 1963.  Occupation:  Solicitor, - so maybe there is an obituary for him ?]
