James Robert Hay McIntosh
« on: Sunday 06 May 12 14:46 BST (UK) »
Another from my research on Scots (or descendants) returning to enlist in Scottish regiments WW1.

So far I have found -

Second Lieutenant James Robert Hay McIntosh, DCM, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), died 22/03/1918, age 25, was the son of James McIntosh, a Contractor, and Joan McIntosh, of Potgietersrust, Transvaal, South Africa. He left St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown in December 1913, where he had been a Prefect, a Corporal in the Cadet Corps, and played for the 1st XV. The family came on ss Briton from Port Elizabeth to Southampton, arriving 21/12/1912, and if the dates are correct, must have returned to South Africa for James to finish his school education. He sailed on ss Ballarat from Durban to London, arriving 18/04/1915, presumably to enlist. The passenger manifest gives his occupation as ‘Storeman’.

Any additional information from South Africa would be greatly appreciated e.g., I am presuming his father and or mother were Scottish, etc.

Thank you.

Alistair

Greetings from NZ,
The maternal side of my family are McIntosh's from South Africa. From what I can see, we are talking about the same family, although I have no record of the return to England which I am eager to learn more about. I can recall that my Grandfather had some connection to Potgietersrust. (I'll try to find out what it was). My Granfather was John McIntosh. His brothers were James Robert Hay, and William. It would be fantastic if you were able to supply more information on the Scottish ancestory. I am currently trying to put together more details of the SA link which I have sadly neglected so far.

I think James R H McIntosh may have been born in South Africa as his parents were married on 29 July 1892 (i understand)
