Flood Children
« on: Friday 04 May 12 12:36 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I am trying to locate info on an Ellen Flood transported on the Elizabeth to NSW Australia in 1828. She is stated as being a widow with 3 children, aged 33yrs. The children did not go to NSW with her.
Where would the children go to,orphanages or workhouses. John was born about 1820,so would of been about 8yrs when she was transported.
Trying to link one of these children as being my gggrandfather. John and Martin are possible names for  2 boys, as they both were married in Sydney NSW in 1852 at St Mary's Cathedral Sydney. John and his wife Mary Ann were the witness to Martin's marriage to a Bridget ?.
On John's death cert it states born in the County of Westhmeath. No parents listed.
Can anybody help with early records of possible marriage or births for these people, or a link to search?
Thanks Natalie

I dont quite get the connection between Ellen born in Kildare and these children born in Co. Westmeath...if you dont know parents names for John and Martin how are they connected to your Ellen ?

see related thread on Kildare board : Flood

 Hi Shane,
I don't know if there is a connection to Ellen and the 2 boys as I am trying to see if there is a possiblity that there may be ,by the process of elimination.
Seems strange that her children were not sent out with her when she was transported as in other cases if they were very young.
I only have what is listed here in NSW to go on, so it is very limited as to know what records are back in Ireland.
Natalie.

natjb,

1828-on the convict ship list, Ellen Flood is listed as being 23 and brought from Kildare. Looking closer, it appears that someone wrote over the 23 to make it 33. She can Read, but cannot write. Listed as a widow, mid wife, consults women, and acts as a Nurse. Looking at other records, she got 7 1/2 years and worked in a factory. Ellen is listed as being 30 on some other convict passenger records.

1852- Martin Flood married Margaret/ Bridget Mahony

1852-John Flood married Mary A Ryan

1829- an  Ellen Flood married Charles Williams. I do not know if this is the same Ellen Flood listed above.

Thankyou Ed,
Yes these are the ones that I am trying to connect together.
They may or not connected at all, but I am trying to eliminate the ones that don't.
Ellen also married a James Byrne in 1830/31 as Charles Williams died. She married Bryne in Sydney.
Trying to see if there is a connection to John and Martin, and if these two boys where children that she left behind in Ireland. Maybe they were related somewhere along the line if not brothers, for John to witness the marriage of Martin, or maybe it was Mary Ann and Bridget that were sisters as both came out on the Lady Peel as famine orphans in 1849 ? Who knows.
Thankyou for your interest in this research
Regards Natalie
