Boilermakers in Southwark
« on: Thursday 03 May 12 19:32 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I have many relations from the Southwark area in the latter park of the 19th century. Many are listed as Boilermakers. When I google Boilermakers in Southwark I find time and time again peoples trees with occupation listed as Boilermaker. Does anybody know where all these Boilermakers worked ? Was there a large factory in Southwark or several small ones ?
Any thoughts or ideas greatfully recived.

Hi Willis

Here's George Waller & Co in Park Street:

J B Gapp in Union Street:

According to this, in 1862 boilermakers were to be found in the east of London, but hatters were to be found in Southwark!

Were boilers used in steam trains?  I was thinking of London Bridge and all the other southern rail stations in the Southwark area.

Definitly boilers used. The railway firms would have employed quite a few boilermakers although he may not have been employed by the railways it is most likely.

Oh good  ;D  I think there was an engine yard next to the Old Kent Road back in the day.  My lot were train drivers and guards and lived in Southwark /Bermondsey too.
