Thank you already for your help I appreciate it. I can look up the records in Ancestry.com but no image and not much additional information. The 1861 census I pull up says
Registration district:    Dalziel
Civil parish:    Dalziel

Is Dalziel the same as Motherwell? I am still confused by the county, parish city differences.

Thanks again for the assistance!

-Heather

Hi Heather

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Not a photograph...but an artist illustration c. 1860 of the Calderbank Iron Works here www.monklands.co.uk/calderbank/

Lots of maps sites to help you get bearings:

www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ - map of counties
www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-maps.htm - parishes within counties

Thank you Monica!

The parish map is a great help!  :) My goal is to try and get to at least the 1700's haha But it is apparent that during the times names were used and reused and similar to many others in those days.  I did learn through a death record the my great great grandmothers parents were William Walker and Margaret Duff. Genealogy is both fun and frustrating at the same time  ;D ???

Monica,

Yes it was Margaret Walker Kennedy's death record from the US.

Do you think it is unlikely to find records prior to 1800? I noticed on one post that someone noted that birth and death records were not always recorded in Scotland early on.
