McCarty - Usk 1851
« on: Thursday 19 May 05 19:09 BST (UK) »
In 1861 Mary McCarty was a 60 yr old widowed midwife living with daughter's family (Murray) at Four Ash Street, Usk (RG9/4012 F17 P36).

Can some kind soul find any details on her sadly-departed husband? Unfortunately I don't know his forename.

hi teevath

Do you know where Mary died and could her husband be buried in Usk and could they be buried together or in a Murray grave

Hi,

I haven't managed to tie her down yet. McCarty or McCarthy is her married name.

In 1871 she was still at Four Ash Street, Usk with the Murreys (sic), aged 73 and described as a 'pauper'. Her name was given as Mary McCarthy this time.

I haven't located her on the 1881, so her death was presumably in those 10 years in Usk, where the family remained.

I regret I know nothing of her husband. She was a widow by the 1861 census.

Cheers.

I don-t know the family's location after the early 1900s. In the 1890s, Michael Murrey (b.1853 Usk) moved to Trevethin, Pontypool and his daughter Winifred Murray (b.1897 Trevethin) married William Parkinson circa 1920.

My brother-in-law is a Parkinson.

hi teevath

I asumed Mary was Catholic and the graveyard is very overgrown....and wet today........i'll try to find out if the church records can be looked at and get back to you.

Did they live near the bridge in Llanbadoc because there is another graveyard in Llanbadoc church across the river from Usk

I don't know the area, but Four Ash Street is in the middle of Usk. It leads onto Castle Parade, which is an extension of Bridge Street . The junction is about 300 metres east of the river. Castle Parade, Bridge Street and the bridge are part of the A472.

Hi

Found in the graveyard only a James Murray born 1852 died 1940 married to a Margaret died 1934 (still lots without headstones)
Will try to ask about church records over the next week.

Family at Four ash street then Twyn Sq then in church street Ellen has died by 1901 and Joseph is living with his father in church street, which is the other side of the church yard from Four ash street. Dennis has his place of birth as Kenna Co Cork

Found a Mary McCarthy death in march 1881 aged 85 in Bedwelty Monmouthshire (could she have gone to live with a son...?)

Found a Daneil McCarthy married to a Mary living in 1861 at Llanvair Kilgeddin place of birth Cork Ireland
Llanvair village is on the road out of Usk just past chain bridge towards Abergaveny (could be your Mary's husbands brother...or Mary on census twice.......long shot)

Does look like lots of families from Ireland all came over to this area at the same time

Hope this helps you

Will keep looking

No record of a connection with James or Margaret Murray.

You're right - the family gad moved to Twyn Square by 1891, and then Church Street by 1901. I believe Ellen Murray (b. McCarthy 1829) died in 1898.

A Mary McCarthy aged 85 in 1881 would be a touch too old for mine, I think. She claimed to be 60 in 1861, and 73 in 1871 though, so she's heading in the right direction!

Mary did claim to be a widow on the census in 1861, so I think the Daniel connection is unlikely.

As you say, lots of families from Ireland all came over to this area at the same time.

I think they did it deliberately to make things awkward!
